Listen up, Y’all - this is an important one.
I had an important and kind of uncomfortable conversation with a good friend of mine regarding similarity in content. And I was in the wrong. Not intentionally, and I feel just awful, but I was. It was a tough convo, but I’m really glad we had it because it brought to light two truths:
1. It is SO important to be honest with each other when we feel content copying has happened.
2. While we may all talk about similar topics, we can differentiate through insights and presentation.
Based on this, I felt compelled to share a couple tips for preventing ourselves from copying content.
See a cool idea or layout that you want to modify? When in doubt, ask. Ask the original creator if it’s ok, and give them credit!
If your struggling with that, prevent yourself from copying by muting accounts or working with a social media manager. This ensures that you’re not seeing other people’s ideas or your deferring content ideas to a professional. And if someone does bring a concern to you, try not to get defensive. You may be unaware, it may not have been intentional, but it still matters.
Creators work hard to create original content. And it’s our responsibility as a community, to give credit where credit is due 🙏
