Heads up: the 52 free Thoroughbreds are back! This viral post somehow comes back to life brand-new every year or so, shared thousands of times by well-meaning animals lovers (and likely shared to Thoroughbred fans more often than not!). While it's become a bit of a long-running joke or a headache in the horse world, depending on your point of view, the original post back in 2011 was a real situation that demonstrated the power of social media to network placement.
Lynn Boggs wrote the original post when her good friend Daniel C. Stearns, DVM, a breeder and owner of racehorses for well over 50 years, passed away on January 27, 2011, leaving his breeding and racing operation to his son to dismantle. Dr. Stearns gave specific instructions to his son before his death that certain horses were to go to certain people, and the rest were to be placed with horse owners preferably within the Thoroughbred industry. He was adamant that none should go to slaughter or first-time horse owners.
Boggs' Facebook post spread like wildfire all around the world, and all 52 horses were placed in safe, reputable homes within four days -- but not before someone had changed language in her original post to suggest that the horses would go to slaughter. This seems to be the version that gets reshared every year, and this year, there's a COVID-19 twist.
