Off The Leash offers professional dog training - specializing in Behavior Modification and all levels of Obedience. Our trainer, Mike Sanchez, is an AKC Certified Evaluator for all three levels of the Canine Good Citizen Program. He also works with the Fayette Humane Society to train rescued dogs to become adoptable. For intensive training with faster results we offer board & train services. We al

so offer individualized boarding & day care services. We accept a maximum of four dogs at a time, allowing us to give each pet our personal attention.

This is Mike Sanchez, dog trainer and owner of OFF THE LEASH. I feel that it will do a lot of good to new dog owners and experienced dog owners alike to write a short informational blog entry on puppy potty training. To start, here is a link to American Kennel Club S.T.A.R. PUPPY LESSONS:

I agree with the AKC in that a crate is a key tool for potty training not only puppies but an adult dog. The reason for the crate's success is that dogs do not want to eliminate where they eat and sleep.

Once the puppy has received all his shots (at about 12 weeks old) dog owners that work full time should consider looking for a doggie day care that is willing to keep the potty training going while they are at work.

Please, listen to this advice from the beginning. When your puppy or dog goes to the potty, say and repeat good potty, good potty while they are in the act of eliminating. Use a soothing voice with an approving tone.

Do not worry if you did not do it with your dog as a puppy, I travel a lot with my German Shepherd and she is 2 years old. I neglected to teach her to potty on command. So, I would be standing outside for a long time waiting for the magic to happen. I decided to teach her, and after a few weeks she totally gets it, and goes on command at the designated area.
