Had a great time judging Cuyahoga Valley retriever clubs, master stake this weekend with Dianne Clark.

It gave me a great pleasure to see third generation retriever trainer, Jen Weitzel, complete the master stake with her dog, I’m your huckleberry.

Jen‘s Grandfather Jim Weitzel, Sr., trained many FC-AFC labs and goldens back in the 70s. He also trained my two golden retrievers when I first started this sport.

He always had labs and would tease his son Jim Jr. about training Chesapeake‘s.

This was my response when Jen said, What do you think my Granddad would think?

FC Carronade’s I’m the One, really is the one!

Hugo won the Open at Madison Retriever Club under the hand of Dave Smith. So happy for Shooting Star Kennel, and especially, Hugo’s owner Mary McGuiness!

Congrats to all the placements and JAMs.
Thank you to the club workers and judges on this chilly April weekend!

To dew or not to dew! Please weigh in. I’ve known some big field and hunt test breeders who say leave them because they are very important to the front leg support.

Im beginning to strongly believe this.

Please weigh in breeders and share why you remove them or why you don’t.

Dewclaw removal is a common practice for many North American dog breeders and owners but questions are raised over the appropriateness of removal. Amongst our European counterparts' removal of...
