Mid-Week Meet a Facility Dog!

This is , who works alongside her handler Officer Rich Simons of the Yale University Police to bring smiles and elicit joy on the Yale campus and to the surrounding New Haven community.

Fun fact: Heidi was the first facility dog to be paired with an Ivy League University police department. When people hear police dog, they often think guard or patrol, but Heidi's sole job is to uplift the spirit, bring comfort, and sometimes she is known to don a costume (thanks to the esteemed Yale drama department) to add extra happiness.

If you are around the New Haven vicinity, and you spot Heidi, be sure to stop and say hello. We assure you she will brighten your day.

Hi! I am Puppy Patti, leaping into fall! Can you tell I'm energetic? I am always up for fun, or a game of fetch. If you are NYC-based, or live near Bedford Hills, New York, consider becoming a PBB volunteer (if you aren't already!). It would give you the chance to take me on outings and help me on my way to being a facility or service dog! And really, who wouldn't want to do that?

Link in bio, or visit puppiesbehindbar.com to apply.

After the unexpected loss of his dog, Wolfgang, Steve Greig decided he had to do something to make Wolfgang’s loss feel purposeful. “I went to a shelter and said, ‘Give me the oldest dog you have,’ ” Greig said. It turned out to be a 12-year-old Chihuahua with four bad knees and a heart murmur, a dead-ender if there ever was one—he named him Eeyore. Since then, he estimates he has taken in 19 senior canines. Read more about Greig’s life with these dogs, and see more photos, here: http://nyer.cm/Ap0CeAX

It's that time already? Heading back to school is so much more fun when greeted by this face. Get to know PBB facility dog , and learn about the important work he does on the daily in his (CT) community.⬇⬇⬇🐾🐕‍🦺

SRO Hodges is ready for the first day of school! Time to do the important things at school like disrupting lessons as I walk by classrooms, checking for crumbs in the teachers’ lounge, and letting tiny/medium sized humans pet me.

My lunch is packed with healthy treats. I never got my Summer Bod, so trying to get my Fall Figure. I packed enough toys to share in case any of the students are teething.

A week ago today, along with NYPD, we co-hosted Working Together: Puppies and Police, an all-day symposium to inform police, fire, university, and public safety departments about the benefits of adding a facility dog to their ranks in order to support employee well-being and to improve community relations.

The program was full of speakers giving first-hand accounts of their experiences and how our pups have positively impacted their departments and communities.

Over 50 departments across the tri-state area were represented, but the true stars of the show were of course our contingent of dogs who are out there doing the work to help so many communities in so many ways.

If you are (or know of) a police, fire or public safety department interested in a Puppies Behind Bars facility dog, visit our website to learn more: https://puppiesbehindbars.com/facility-dogs-for-police-departments/

Attendance was made possible by a generous grant from Frog Crossing Foundation, Inc. North Caldwell, NJ.

Monday Musings from puppy Riley.

The way a crow
shook down on me
the dust of snow
from a hemlock tree
has given my heart
a change of mood
and saved some part
of a day I had rued.
