We are a NO KILL municipal shelter that provides animal control service for the Town of Newburgh, and we are dedicated to keeping our community safe and compassionate while transforming the lives of animals. We are not always in the office during business hours due to road work and patrols. If you are looking to donate any items, please feel free to leave them beside the door and we will get them

when we return. Impounded animals will be available after their stray hold and vetting is complete. We are unable to foster dogs however, we do foster cats and kittens. Volunteering is always welcome; you can pick up a volunteer application from our shelter any time. We do not do community service hours. Monetary donations are always welcome.

🚨ATTENTION TOWN RESIDENTS🚨

Our office is aware of a black bear and her 3-4🐻🐾cubs in the areas of Cronomer Valley and Fostertown. While sightings can be concerning, black bears are a natural part of New York's wildlife. They often are just passing through, looking for their next meal.

Because this is a mother bear with her cubs, extra caution is strongly advised, as bears are very protective of their young and will become very aggressive if approached or threatened.
‼️DO NOT APPROACH THEM‼️

To help prevent attracting bears, residents should secure garbage cans with locks or straps and bring them inside your garage if possible. We recommend removing all wildlife feeders as well.

Please note that our department does not have the authority or capabilities to trap and relocate bears. Residents are encouraged to report all sightings directly to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Region 3 office. They can be reached at (845) 256-3098.

By removing attracting items and giving wildlife their space, we can keep both residents and bears safe. Thank you!

📚Fun Fact Friday🐢

Did you know that Painted Turtles cannot eat their food unless their mouths are submerged in water? This is because their tongues cannot move freely, which makes it harder to manipulate food on land. They are also the most common species found in New York State.

As the weather gets hotter, we’re getting our play kennels ready for summer so our pups can stay cool and have some fun!☀️🐾

We are currently in need of plastic kiddie pools for the dogs to splash around in during those hot summer days. If you have any new or gently used plastic kiddie pools you no longer need, we would be grateful for the donation.

Our pups absoultyle love splashing around on those hot summer days. 💦💙

Meet Me Wednesday: Cat Edition🐈

Meet Rikki and Pippa 🤎🩶🤍

These two independent kitties are looking for a special home, preferably a barn or stable where they can live comfortably on their own terms. They are both great with other cats and might prefer it.

Pippa (pink nose) is a beautiful short-haired tabby who is very shy and unsure of people around her. She prefers to keep her distance and would thrive in an environment where she can feel safe.

Rikki (white paws) is a quiet, hidden observer type. He enjoys having his own space and tends to stay hidden a lot. He enjoys just doing his own thing without much interest in humans.

While neither of these kitties is looking to be a lap cat, they have a lot to give, mean well, and deserve to be appreciated for who they are. A barn would be the perfect fit for cats like Rikki and Pippa, which would allow freedom and independence. If interested in giving one or both of these kitties and a place they can call home, call or email our office. Let's find these two a home!!

🐢⚠️It is Turtle Xing Season⚠️🐢

This time of year, female turtles are searching for the perfect spot to lay their eggs and may risk crossing roads to do so.

If you see a turtle trying to cross a road:
-SLOW DOWN!
-If they are in the roadway and you would like to help them, please place them off the road in the direction they’re heading.
-DO NOT pick them up from their tails as this can dislocate or fracture the tailbone. Almost all turtles, except for snapping turtles, can be picked up safely from the sides of their shell.
-If it’s a snapping turtle, don’t reach for the sides or front as their necks can extend out very far and quickly. Drag them by the back of their shell onto a blanket or car mat, then drag them over to the side of the road to release them.
-If you see a turtle in your yard, DO NOT DISTURB them. They are supposed to be there so please let them be.
-If you spot an injured turtle, contact our office or a local wildlife rehabber.
