There were more than 300 specialized dogs who worked the sites of 9/11 and only about 100 of them were prepared for the size of the disaster. Below we highlight a small number of those amazing dogs. ๐ฆฎ๐๏ธ
From top left clockwise:
Riley- made famous for his image being transported across debris at Ground Zero.
Sage- She was sent to search the Pentagon at only 18 months old.
Coby/Guinness- Worked 12 hour shifts for 11 days.
Appollo- One of the first K9s on the scene 15 minutes after the World Trade Center attack. He was almost killed by falling debris and flames but continued working.
Jake- A stray turned SAR (search and rescue) dog who worked 17 days at the World Trade Center.
Trakr- Traveled with a Canadian Police officer and he discovered the last survivor at the World Trade Center.
Louie- The only SAR Boxer who participated in the search and rescue efforts at the World Trade Center.
Bretagne- Worked 10 days at Ground Zero. She went on to work rescue missions of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Irma. She was the longest surviving SAR dog from 9/11 and she passed away in 2016 at the age of 17!
Prior to 9/11 most people in the U.S. were not familiar with disaster search and rescue dogs. Besides the heroic SAR dogs, there were many therapy dogs used after 9/11. ๐บ๐ธ
