These babies love their dust baths!

Now that it's staying pretty warm out here, the chicks have been able to go directly to the outside brooder where they range from 1-day old to a few weeks. Always make sure they're not bullying the little guys, but I've found they serve as good mentors. They still have a heat source as it does get into the 60s here at night. That heater on the left stays on and they can come and go as they please.

Lots of babies coming along over here! It's so hard when its time to stop setting eggs. Unfortunately we can't hatch them all. Still setting silvers and a couple others but I've got lots of golds!

Another successful hatch today! 32/34 hatched. I use these bags to keep eggs separated to know which breeding pens they're from at hatch. Chicks are then toe-punched to permanently ID which pen they're from.

*30 little birds. Two hatches from this week with lots of Golds and a few silvers in the mix! I have a hatch about every 4 days here. Lots of babies!

A rowdy bunch soon before being moved to the outside brooder.

The oldest of the babies in the outside brooder. When first hatched, I keep them inside for the first couple of weeks. This year, inside, I am using the hatching time brooders but have previously used totes with the brinsea ecoglow brooder plates. In the hatching time, I start them with the solid floor on paper towels and then at about 2 weeks they are ok to be on the 1/2" grid. Now that it's plenty warm out, I've been moving them from paper towel directly to the outside brooder. This heater is from sweeter heater and works great for the sebrights. It's 11" x 40" and can accommodate well over 50 chicks. It only heats underneath so they go under as needed just as they would a mother hen, naturally. It also doesnt heat up the entire pen so even if its 40s in the mornings and 80s by the afternoon, they don't get too warm. It's nice because they wean themselves off the heat. You will notice they start to sleep around the edge and then move further away and eventually they'll be roosting ontop as they're doing here!

Some of the 15 babies from today's hatch settling into the brooder. I always co-mingle them with some of the previous batch chicks so they can help show them the ropes. I also always dip their beaks into the water when placing them in the brooder so they know where it's at. Probably unnecessary as they'd learn from the others, but better safe than sorry. 😊🐤🐣

First batch of chicks got moved outside this weekend. I've found these sweeter heaters to work great. Even if the temps dip low into the 30's and 40's they keep them warm enough unlike other similar brooders. I hang mine just a few inches up and they can come and go as they please under it. Its nice because here in Florida it may be 50 in the morning and 90 by the afternoon and these don't heat the entire pen, so you don't have to worry about them overheating like in a battery brooder.
