Holiday Treats: Remember to Keep Your Horse's Gut Happy! 🎄

The holidays often mean indulging in treats for us humans, but remember your horse's digestive system is much more sensitive! While it's tempting to share the holiday spirit with sugary treats, or special snacks, overindulgence can quickly lead to serious gastric issues.

🐴 Protect your horse's health this season:

Stick to their regular feeding routine
Limit treats to low sugar options and small portions
Avoid sudden diet changes

A little extra attention to their diet now can prevent colic, ulcers, and other digestive problems that could turn your holiday into an emergency vet call.

When in doubt, the best gift you can give your horse is consistency and routine care. 💚

Presented for chronic hind limb lameness, this horse arrived at our clinic after an extensive and costly workup elsewhere without a definitive answer.

At presentation, the horse was lame in the left hind limb.

🔎 Step-by-step findings:
Markedly positive to distal hind limb flexion
Improved ~80% with a left hind fetlock joint block

Radiographs revealed mild arthrosis of the fetlock joint

An important incidental finding: asymmetric tuber sacrale, contributing to pelvic imbalance.

Based on these findings, the left hind fetlock was treated with corticosteroid injection, and the horse is currently awaiting a recheck examination.

This case highlights how a methodical exam, strategic diagnostics, and decades of experience allow Dr. Porter to identify subtle contributors to complex lameness cases.

Did You Know? 💡

You can actually influence your mare’s breeding season with artificial lighting!

Here are some key facts about using light therapy to advance your mare's cycle:

🌅 Natural timing: In the Northern Hemisphere, mares typically begin ovulating around April 10–12.

📆 Duration matters: Mares need ~60 days of exposure to extended daylight hours (or shortened dark periods) to advance the onset of cyclicity.

🌤 Ambient conditions: Mares kept under natural light (ambient photoperiod) usually do not ovulate for the first time until mid-April or May.

✨ Why use artificial lighting?
Housing mares under an artificial photoperiod stimulates follicle development earlier in the year. This helps them ovulate sooner than mares kept under natural light alone.

💡 What kind of light do you need?
A 100–200 W incandescent bulb or a standard fluorescent light in a 12' x 12' stall is typically sufficient to achieve the desired effect.

Two popular lighting options:

1️⃣ Barn lighting:
Bring your mare into the barn before dark and keep lights on until approximately 11 p.m.
(This extends her perceived daylight and helps shift her cycle earlier.)

2️⃣ Equilume Light Mask:
A convenient, effective option that delivers targeted blue light without changing your mare’s turnout or routine.

🌱 Planning to breed early in the season?
Placing your mare under lights now can assist your mare in ovulating sooner.

📞 Contact PHD Veterinary Services to discuss your breeding goals.

🐴This horse presented to our clinic with swelling around the hocks and noticeable lameness. After a thorough physical examination and radiographic imaging, Dr. Porter diagnosed a classic case of sequestrum formation in the proximal lateral metatarsal bone.

❓What is a sequestrum?
A sequestrum is a piece of dead bone that has separated from healthy bone tissue. In this case, the sequestrum most likely developed secondary to blunt-force trauma such as a kick, impact, or other direct injury to the area.

🩻Key radiographic findings:
The radiographs revealed the hallmark appearance of a sequestrum: a distinct fragment of non-viable bone surrounded by reactive inflammatory tissue.

✨Treatment approach:
This horse was started on long-term systemic antibiotics with the goal of allowing the body to naturally resorb the sequestrum, potentially avoiding surgical intervention. However, surgery may still be required if the fragment does not resolve on its own and needs to be removed. Additional therapies, such as shockwave, can also aid in reducing inflammation and promoting healing.

Alcohol Arthrodesis: Treating Advanced Arthritis of the Distal Hock Joints

Most recently, Dr. Porter performed alcohol arthrodesis of the distal hock joints a procedure for horses with advanced arthrosis (arthritis) of the distal hock joints.

This technique involves two careful steps: First, he injected contrast material and took radiographs to verify precise positioning and ensure the contrast stays exactly where he needed it and nowhere else.

Then, he injected medical-grade, 200-proof alcohol directly into the affected distal hock joints. This targeted treatment promotes fusion of the arthritic joints, which can resolve lameness and get horses back to comfortable movement.

For horses suffering from chronic hock pain, alcohol arthrodesis offers a minimally invasive option for care, with excellent results in many cases.

Have questions about this procedure or your horse's joint health? Call or text us as we're here to help your horse move comfortably again. 352-538-9165
