Savin Hill Farm

Savin Hill Farm Competitive Hunter/Jumper program focused on individualized approach to competition and horsemanship The care of our horses at SHF takes priority.

SHF Core Values:

SHF is structured as a Team and as such each member is expected to provide support for each other and for their horses. Riders are not required to enter competitions, but are encouraged to attend to support other SHF team members and to help out where they can. We, as a team, will approach our sport with respect for others, our horses as well as for ourselves. We can therefore be

proud of our personal and competitive accomplishments without bringing others down. Horses are not forced to work for us, they choose to work for us. We must all, therefore take the responsibility to ensure their welfare, even before our own comforts. Every horse must be groomed, hooves picked, and acceptably clean before and after work. Every team member must sweep after their horses before and after their rides. SHF team members will be able to take pride in the care their horses receive not only from the facility but also from themselves. Savin Hill Farm intends to produce equestrians who understand responsibility, teamwork, hard work, and fun. They should be able to take these life lessons to the classroom or work and apply them to their lives outside of the barn. When we enter competitions, we do so to learn, to strengthen our connections with our animals, to have fun, and to do as well as we can in an atmosphere that tests our abilities. We will be proud of our accomplishments and open to learning from our mistakes.

To this day one of the best jumpers I’ve ridden was my little Quarter Horse, Riley ❤️

In 1971, a leggy young Appendix Quarter Horse gelding named Texas caught the attention of the crowd at the Calgary International Horse Show (Alberta) when he veered sharply off course and jumped out the in-gate.

A new study suggests genetic changes allow horses to produce more energy, while minimizing the toll the energy takes on cells.

Probably a somewhat controversial opinion, but I’m convinced now that there are a lot of horses going around with ill fitting saddles. The “good” news for those owners and riders who love their saddles, I think a lot of horses have a suck it up attitude. They have evolved over milenia to hide pain, and the discomfort of a bad saddle is likely just ignored. But some show it. They buck, stop, run out, and even develop lameness. Look at the photo attached. That’s just the front end of the horse, and so many large muscle groups are right under the saddle and our seat. I think we end up selling, injecting, and even step down levels horses that maybe are not meeting potential, or have neck or back or odd front end lameness, or aren’t careful over fences because the restrictiveness of the saddle. Now here’s my controversial opinion. The French made saddles (seems like almost all) are big culprits. Those companies have brilliant marketing and sponsoring campaigns. They partially train “fitters” then put a sales quota on them. This turns saddle “fitters” into salesmen. That does not mean they are fitting saddles correctly. We, the riders, end up pulling saddles up onto the shoulders and withers to feel secure. Bad spot to sit a saddle. Anyway, just my opinion and what I’m starting to see more and more of.

Well I totally missed this milestone birthday on Saturday! Happy 25th to Romeo! Aka Feingold aka Mr Romeo aka MrMr! You have been the most wonderful oversized fancy and quite literally headstrong partner for my mom since you were 5. I could not have asked for a better boy for her to ride and am grateful for the privilege to have ridden and shown you myself! You might have torn holes in my gloves but you made it look pretty. From tempe changes to 3’ hunters you have always been such a fun ride. It’s so much fun to watch the bond you and my mom have, I hope it lasts for another lifetime and for all lifetimes to come ❤️🎉🦄

I haven’t coursed my horse since the last Bernie clinic back in September! This jump off round after the first round over a very fun course set by Bernie felt so smooth. Homework starting to really pay off and I’m getting into a good groove with my boy ❤️🦄
First course:
Short diagonal over the roll top, immediate bending 5 to a 3 stride line. Bending 6 strides to single vertical bending either 6 or waiting 7 to Liverpool 1 stride in n out. Across the diagonal single oxer, right turn long approach either inside or outside the roll top to single oxer to finish.
Jump off:
Roll top roll back to single vertical, back through bending 6, right turn single oxer bending 6 to oxer, finish with single oxer on the outside

Riding with Bernie Traurig is always a wonderful opportunity, but he adds to that with his evening presentations on the Saturdays of his clinics. This past Saturday I might argue was one of the best talks I have had with him. My girls showed up tired yet energetic and enthusiastic. They asked great questions that ranged from “how to’s” to the state of our sport and horsemanship. We watched videos of top jumpers and discussed their strategies and videos of top hunter and equitation riders and discussed what judges will be looking for. And after the younger crowd and Bernie himself headed home, Sophie and I stayed with our older girls and talked about what it means to be a professional and what it means to be good horse women. This whole weekend was one to be cherished, but the evening with Bernie was an added extra special experience ❤️

Thank you Dr Dave Klugh for the years of excellent dental care for our horses. I am sad to see you go but I wish you the best retirement!! I am proud(?) to say my very difficult oversized young horse who is TERRIFIED of needles was his last hurrah. It took three attempts, three trainers, two vets, and a twitch and a blindfold to get him sedated 🤦🏽‍♀️ but, Dave’s expertise left him with a much happier mouth. Now we work to get Lucius more confident with little pokes ❤️🦄

Welcome to Trainer Tuesday! Each week we ask trainers a question and gather their answers for you. These trainers have a range of experience, backgrounds, and focus points of their programs, so the answers have as much variation as you would expect and also probably much more similarity. This week....

Doing the right thing can at times be a grey area. The black and white; right or wrong path is commonly not obvious. But if you slow down, pay attention, and follow your instincts, you can frequently find yourself going the right direction.
Dropping Lincoln off at another farm to retire instead of keeping him here was not an easy decision even though I know he will be well cared for. But when I pulled in and he called, answered immediately and emphatically by an old barn mate, Frank, my apprehension began to fade. Frank called so many times. He tried so hard to get to Lincoln he popped a board out trying to jump the fence. I left with them running together happily, and got home to a photo of them sharing dinner. The right thing indeed ❤️🦄
