Only one spot left for the upcoming collaboration clinic between Alfadans Equestrian Arts and Valkyrie Icelandic Equestrian Arts' Laura "Lala" Benson scheduled for June 21-22 in Newberg, OR!

In this clinic you will have the benefit of learning from not only one, but two FEIF Level 3 Holar graduates as we explore the discipline and philosophy behind Gæðingalist: the Icelandic Horse discipline that combines the structure and systematic training of dressage with the artistry and poetry of freestyle performance.

In this clinic we will use both theory and ridden lessons to explore diverse concepts such as training fundamentals, healthy balance and posture and the use of artistic expression to enhance your training sessions and create beautiful freestyles that show off your skills and connection with your horse.

Registration link is here: https://app.acuityscheduling.com/schedule.php?owner=16394034&appointmentType=78846441

Level 2: Developing
This level is designed for horses and riders who are developing their skills in this sport. The central working concepts of this level are maintaining and distinguishing tolt and trot, developing canter transitions, the continued development of a good and effective seat and introducing confidence at speed. Entrants show walk, trot, tolt and some canter transitions in dressage phase as well as a hind end yield. In the working phase, trot or tolt can be shown on most obstacles, however the competitor can choose to walk many such obstacles for a maximum score of 6.5. There is no canter in the working phase and tolt or trot should be shown between obstacles.

Icelandic Working Equitation- A New Discipline for Icelandic Horses and the People who Love them!

As many of you know Alex and I have loved exploring Working Equitation. The sport's emphasis on agility, balance, harmony, bravery and technical skill dovetails exactly with the emphasis in our breed, gave us another opprotunity to show off the versatility of the Icelandic Horse, and improved our riding and training in all the ways we value most. But as we did it more we started thinking, the emphasis on canter work in WE makes it tricky for the average Icelandic to progress through the levels, and furthermore with our emphasis on developing all five gaits as well as the unique traditions and history of Icelandic horsemanship being something worth celebrating on its own. Could we create a unique leveling system, with goals and obstacles that reflect our unique horsemanship traditions and training goals while still maintaining the emphasis on bravery, agility, balance and cooperation?

We think we've done it! We hope you will join us in this adventure! We will be posting more about various aspects specifically in the coming days but here first is a general overview of this new discipline.

What is it?
The discipline of Icelandic Working Equitation was created to recognize and promote Icelandic horsemanship as well as its culture, attire and techniques. There are three trials that make up a Icelandic Working Equitation competition: Dressage, Working Phase and Speed.

Dressage: The dressage phase demonstrates the fundamentals of good training and the qualities of the Icelandic Horse as a sport horse. As the horse progresses up the levels, they should demonstrate a relaxed, forward thinking, agile, high performance horse that moves well and correctly through the body, showcasing a high level of athleticism and harmony.

Working Phase: The Working phase is designed to represent the potential obstacles and tasks required of a working Icelandic Horse both throughout history as well as in modern day. Certain obstacles also pay homage to Icelandic Horse horse culture in general, both past and present. This phase should demonstrate a harmonious partnership, precision, as well as high levels of horsemanship. This phase has been heavily inspired by Working Equitation's efforts to honor working horse traditions throughout the world, and has been modified to celebrate the particular talents and skills of the Icelandic Horse, as well as the traditions that have accompanied their use.

Speed: The Speed phase is solely judged on time taken to complete the obstacles in the course, alongside time penalties and bonuses. There is no concern for style, however time may be added for rough riding at the judge’s discretion. This phase demonstrates the horse’s bravery, boldness, and speed capacity as well as the rider’s precision and coordination.

Want to see it in action or try it for yourself? We will be holding clinics throughout the year both at our farm as well as various farms around the country, we could be coming to a farm near you!

We will also have a competition June 14-15. Come to watch, compete and join the adventure with us!

Video Note: Some video has been taken from Icelandic Horses competing in traditional Working Equitation shows, however the obstacles seen and the style of riding reflect the vision and goals of the sport.

✨Introducing the first of four trainers for the North American Youth Cup 2025! ✨
We are lucky to have Alex Venable who will be teaching the trail obstacle lessons!
Alex has been working with Icelandic Horses since 2000 and since then has worked for big names in the US and around the world starting at age 18. These accomplished trainers and instructors include Carrie Brandt and Terral Hill, Gudmar Petursson, and Laura Benson in the US, and champion trainers and breeders Eyrun Yr, Jessie Hujbers, and Omar Ingi Omarsson in Iceland. Alex was one of the first American trainers to be certified as a FEIF Trainer Level 1 under the USIHC system in 2022.
Alex has also had a successful competition record achieving the highest national ranking in both 2015 and 2016 in T4 (loose rein tolt competition), and received the highest national ranking in 2022 in Group Open Four Gait. Additionally Alex has been branching off into the discipline of Working Equitation, showing the versatility of the Icelandic Horse and her skills as a trainer in dressage and obstacle work. In 2022 she was the highest ranked Level 2 rider in the region and third nationally. Her unique work in bridleless riding has earned her special recognition and a special relationship with her horses.

Snuður frá Kjarri is a willing sensitive gelding with lots of trail riding experience and extremely promising gaits perfect for cruising the trails or rocking the competition arena. His father is the legendary honor prize stallion Stáli frá Kjarri who is known for offspring with soft, impressive tolt with the ability to go both very slow and fast in this prized gait. Snuður has high potential in the show ring, is fun to ride and is very well trained. Snuður needs a confident experienced rider to help him through this period of his life as ulcers caused him to lose a large amount of confidence this past year. However we believe that diligent work from a tactful rider with a soft touch will result in a horse worth many fold more than the original investment. He is five gaited with promising pace, however the pace is currently largely untrained. This is a fabulous opportunity for a competition rider who has been unsure how to afford their “next tier” horse or someone who wants to develop this sensitive soul and help him bloom into a fabulous, gorgeous pleasure riding horse.
