Disease topic of the week : Diabetes

Diabetes occurs in pets when their body cannot use sugar the way it should. Glucose- is the main source of energy for the body’s cells, the levels of glucose in the blood are primarily controlled by a hormone called insulin.
If there is not enough insulin (or if the body is unable to use the insulin) glucose accumulates in high levels in the blood- a condition called hyperglycemia. When the glucose reaches a certain lever it overflows into the urine which is a condition called glucosuria and it pulls large volumes of water with it. Because of this you will notice an increase in urination and water consumption.
In diabetic pets not enough glucose gets transported into the body’s cells, in result the cells don’t have enough energy to function not ally and body tissues become starved for energy . Thus state of metabolic “starvation” causes thr body to break down fat and muscle tissue - resulting with weight loss often seen in diabetic pets
Your vet will diagnose diabetes by doing a blood draw & testing your pets urine. Treatment usually requires frequent glucose checks , daily insulin injections, dietary modifications and prescription food.
If you have questions or concerns regarding this with your pet- give our clinic a call and we can get your pet scheduled with one of our vets😊🐾

This month is National pet dental month!

- it’s very important for cats and dogs to have their teeth checked to help prevent periodontal disease. This does affect most pets by the age of 3. Untreated dental issues cause the loss of teeth , and allows bacteria from the mouth to enter the bloodstream potentially damaging vital organs. Regular care prevents chronic pain and infection!
Symptoms to look for - bad breath , trouble eating / drinking, pawing at mouth or face , swelling, red/ bleeding gums, yellow or brown tartar build up.

Meet Roux!
He was in yesterday to be neutered. While in recovery it’s safe to say Dr Martin fell in love with him and was soaking up all his sweet cuddles while charting! I would say this was very much needed for the both of them, Roux needed a little extra assurance that he was okay♥️

Why do we recommend neutering?
It reduces the risk of certain cancers and disease such as testicular cancer and an enlarged prostate. It also curbs problem behaviors such as roaming, urine marking, and aggression. Ultimately neutering contributes to a longer and healthier life.🐾🐾
