German shepherds are known for sensitive stomachs, and when the gut is inflamed, it shows up in the eyes, the ears and the mouth.

The topper I pour over breakfast:
🐟 1 sardine in water, no added salt, mashed
🥚 1 cooked egg
🥥 Half a teaspoon of coconut oil
🟡 A tiny pinch of turmeric

Mix it and pour it over their food every morning. Healthy fats and omega-3s that support the skin barrier.

But if it keeps coming back no matter what you do, it's usually starting in the gut. And shepherds have one of the most sensitive guts of any large breed 🦠

Antlers, bones, hooves, hard nylon. With a shepherd's bite, that's how teeth crack 🦷

Here's what I make instead:
🥕 Big carrots, cut lengthways into thick batons
🍲 Covered in plain bone broth, overnight in the fridge
🧊 Frozen, then left out a few minutes before serving

Firm enough to work the gums, and it gives way before a tooth does. A 10-second snack becomes a 10-minute job.

⚠️ Plain broth only, no onion, garlic or salt. And stay in the room while they chew.

Store treats can list 30 ingredients. These have 3 🍠

🍠 1 cooked sweet potato, mashed
🥜 A spoonful of xylitol-free peanut butter
🥚 1 egg

Roll into small balls, bake at 350°F for 15 minutes. Done.

Gut-friendly fiber, real protein, and it costs almost nothing.

⚠️ Check the peanut butter for xylitol — it's toxic to dogs and can hide on labels as "birch sugar."

Four fruits I keep in rotation for my shepherds 🍉

🍉 Watermelon — 92% water, almost no calories. Keeps them lean, which takes pressure off those hips.
🫐 Blueberries — one of the highest antioxidant foods there is.
🍍 Pineapple — has bromelain, a natural anti-inflammatory that supports the joints.

And the fourth one is the one most shepherd owners never think to give 👀

⚠️ Seedless watermelon with no rind, and pineapple without the skin or core. A few pieces at a time.

The vitamins didn't go into your shepherd. They went down the sink 😳

Everything that cooks out of carrots and green beans ends up in the pot water. Strain it into a jug, let it cool, then pour it over their food or freeze it into cubes for later.

With a shepherd this matters more than it does for other dogs. Their stomach is the most sensitive of any big breed, so you can't just keep switching foods to get more nutrients in. This adds something without changing a thing about their meal 🦠

⚠️ Plain water only. No salt, no stock cubes, and never a pot that had onion or garlic in it — both are toxic to dogs.

One bag of carrots. Two hours. Two hundred treats 🥕

Peel the sides into thin strips, lay them out on a wire rack, bake at 170°F for two hours and let them cool.

Low calorie, almost no cost, and they help scrub the plaque while they chew. And with a stomach this sensitive, something this plain is about as safe as a treat gets.
