Happy National Walking the Dog Day! ▼・ᴥ・▼
Walking your dog is not only a great way to exercise and bond with your furry friend, but also a chance to give them the 5 freedoms they deserve.
🫶 The 5 freedoms are internationally accepted standards of care that affirm every living being's right to humane treatment. They are:
- Freedom from hunger and thirst
- Freedom from discomfort
- Freedom from pain, injury and disease
- Freedom to express normal behavior
- Freedom from fear and distress
By providing your dog with these 5 freedoms, you are ensuring their physical and mental well-being, and enhancing their quality of life.
🐾 So, how can you give your dog the 5 freedoms while walking them?
- Provide your dog with fresh water and healthy treats during or after the walk.
- Make sure your dog has a comfortable harness, leash, and clothing that fit well and protect them from the weather.
- Avoid walking your dog on hot pavement, sharp objects, or toxic plants that could harm them. Check your dog for any signs of injury or illness after the walk and seek veterinary care if needed.
- Let your dog explore their surroundings, sniff, mark, play, and interact with other dogs and people, as long as it is safe and respectful. Teach your dog new skills and tricks using positive reinforcement.
- Avoid exposing your dog to loud noises, aggressive animals, or stressful situations that could scare or upset them. Provide your dog with praise, affection, and security during and after the walk.
