UPDATE - Halo Mary had her recheck yesterday and she passed with flying colors!! Her ears are perfectly clean and free of infection and the "chronic" wound that wouldn't heal for four years is nearly completely healed after ten days! She is still wearing her little "sweater" until the last little scabs are gone but we have removed her e-collar. And... she has gained a pound!!

This is a long post. Please read it to the end.
This was Nala. She had a family. She had a story. What she needed was a miracle.
No rescue ever wants to say "no" or "we can't" but sometimes you have no choice. There are no options. It hurts and it haunts and you live with the guilt and you face the sad and sorry realization again that you can't save them all.
That was the stand I had to take for Nala.
Medical cases are hard for rescue. Long term medical cases like Nala are a nightmare. The costs rarely bring the desired outcome and Nala's prognosis was no different. A chronic wound spanning four years that refused to heal didn't paint a pretty picture. I considered it a dozen different ways. It always came down to the same decision.
Irving House is small. If bigger rescues weren't stepping up for her, what were we going to do? It wasn't an easy decision or one made lightly but it was the only decision. I replied to the plea with apology and let it go with a prayer.
She was placed "at risk" for medical. It's a nice way of saying she wouldn't live much longer at acc. It didn't alter my decision. It just deepened the guilt. I started to consider maybe there was some way. There wasn't.
But some you just can't let go.
I followed her status. Surely a bigger rescue would step up. Surely, she'd get adopted. Surely, something would turn in her favor.
Nala was scheduled for surgery to close the wound. The warning bells went off in my head. She wouldn't survive it. I knew it in my heart. I felt it with every fiber. I couldn't look away from her picture. Her eyes said "help me."
And we did. It was a wild Hail Mary pass that would either win big or lose hard.
The entire two hour drive to acc I considered the madness and a dozen different scenarios all with dire outcomes.
I walked the long hallway to the isolation room. The attendant instructed me to pull on the protective gown and cap and booties. She led me into the room and unlocked Nala's cage and that sweet old girl didn't make a sound. She just reached for me.
I signed all the paperwork accepted full financial responsibility and pulled her.
We went straight to my vet.
She had evidence of a prolonged history of ear mites so bad that when the wax was cleaned the blood poured from her ears. She had an oral infection so severe she was dripping nasal discharge. And the wound was self-inflicted from ripping herself apart from the pain.
Surgery would have done nothing but result in her tearing herself apart.
She is safe now and comfortable for the first time in four years. She has a long recovery ahead but that "chronic" wound is already healing and so are her unseen scars left by years of abhorrent neglect
She got her miracle and so did we. We've named her Halo Mary.

His fur has grown back and his scabs ae nearly all healed! He is a perfect little companion for Liam and can usually be found trailing after him. ❤️

More Jasper fun facts;
He likes veggies. Peas and carrots are particular favorites!
He likes to run with the cats even if he doesn't know why.
He spins like a top when he sees his dinner bowl.
He got his first "time out" for stealing the cheese out of the grocery bag. This was followed by his second time out for eating the cat food. ❤️
