One of the newest dogs to come into foster care with Metropolitan Maltese Rescue is Tad, named as such because he is a tad small. Tad came to us from the Manhattan Animal Care Center, where he'd been surrendered by his "owners". Quotation marks intentional. The people had bought him/ordered him from a pet store in Hong Kong, who had no qualms about fudging the puppy's age as being months older than the truth on animal import forms, deeming him old enough to export and travel, and then shipping him around the world to these buyers. Upon arrival, Tad "wasn't what they ordered", and with “much distress” (insert eye roll here), they brought him to the shelter rather than keeping him.
The shelter contacted Metropolitan Maltese Rescue immediately, as this little guy is emaciated (1 pound 11 ounces), too young to be away from his birth family, is ill with both kennel cough and giardia, and needs a safe place to be where he can have careful and more one-on-one attention than can be given while in a cage in the shelter's medical wards. We jumped on the logistics immediately, and had placement and transport arranged by 8AM of the same day.
Tad is now in his safe foster home, with all that he needs, plenty of attention and care and love, and isolated from the home's other dogs and cat, so as to keep his germs to himself.
So...welcome Tad! He has a long road ahead of him, but he is in the right place now, and he will never again belong to a family for whom he "wasn't what they ordered".
And, welcome weekend! TGIF.
