As Food Aid Ends, Bideawee Will Distribute 30,000 Pounds of Free Pet Food to Help Families

On Friday, an estimated 42 million Americans will lose their food assistance benefits due to the ongoing shutdown - nearly 3 million of them in New York State alone. When people struggle to feed themselves, they struggle to feed their pets, and research shows that many will feed their pets before feeding themselves - a heartbreaking choice no pet parent should have to make.

Here’s how we are responding:

• In 2022, we launched our Community Initiatives program to provide free veterinary care, preventive treatment, and pet food so pets can stay with the families who love them

• On October 7th, we partnered with and to distribute more than 4,000 pounds of free pet food to New Yorkers in need

• In the coming months, we will continue to distribute up to 30,000 lbs of additional free pet food to help pet parents through this difficult time

We will continue to support pets and the people who love them, and we are grateful to our amazing partners, and to all of you for making our work possible.

Hi everyone,

Wanted to give a huge thank you to everybody who came out on Sunday to help spread the wood chips. Despite the heat, we had a fantastic turnout throughout the day and the run is looking better than it has in quite awhile, all thanks to the efforts of this community.

With the wood chips spread, we’ll have smaller cleanups over the next few months to keep the chips in place and tackle smaller projects around the run (like weeding, picking up trash, and repainting the benches). These cleanups will take place on Saturday mornings from 10 am - 12 pm on September 20th, October 11th, and November 8th. Dogs can tag along and supervise our work as the gate will be closed, so feel free to join us at the run with your pup on a Saturday morning and help us maintain our shared space.

Finally, be on the lookout for more updates about the run as we head into fall. We still expect the plans for the redesign of the run to be put up to Community Board 11 for approval in September or October, and will need a strong community turnout to make sure our dogs get what they deserve.
