WTF?? Outrage erupts across America with news that Trump’s DOJ is finalizing a settlement with for his $10 billion demand over his leaked tax returns, perhaps the most stunning and largest grift by any president in US history.
The New York Times reported that Trump’s Department of Justice is holding internal discussions about settling the lawsuit Trump filed against the IRS over the release of his 2019 tax returns. Trump sued in January, claiming the IRS failed to protect his records from disclosure.
That lawsuit already looked absurd on its face because the IRS is part of the executive branch. Trump effectively oversees the same government agency he is demanding billions from. Now the possibility of a settlement has people asking whether taxpayers are about to fund Trump’s personal grievance operation.
And the internet exploded.
TrendingLiberal pointed out the absurdity:
The man who did this has already been convicted and put in jail. He leaked many people's returns, not just Trump's. Are we going to give $10 Billion out to ALL of them? NO. This is an INSANE grift, and sane people in our government need to do EVERYTHING in their power to stop it.
Bharat Ramamurti, former Biden economic adviser:
This is a massive scam—much worse than the ballroom—and Dems should raise hell over it.
Jonathan Cohn, Progressive Mass political director:
Everything about this is such record-breaking corruption.
Hemant Mehta, author and ex-Jeopardy! champion:
Republicans are allowing Trump to raid the treasury because none of them care about corruption.
Trump has spent years attacking federal agencies as corrupt and politically weaponized. At the same time, critics have called Trump a threat to democratic institutions and accused him of using government power for personal revenge.
Donna Brazile, longtime Democratic strategist, posted:
I strongly disapprove of the US government giving Mr. Trump a big payback. Hold the leakers accountable. Give us the facts. Go public and let us see through the corruption. Why penalize hardworking [people]?
The IRS already paid damages in related cases involving the leak. Now Trump wants $10 BILLION while controlling the administration negotiating the payout.
Americans are watching a president test how far corruption can creep inside the federal government.
