Manhattan ACC Cat Volunteers: The Cats that Capture our Hearts

Manhattan ACC Cat Volunteers: The Cats that Capture our Hearts This page was created by Manhattan NYCACC volunteers to celebrate the love we share for the MACC cats. We hope it helps them find loving homes.

As volunteers and fosters, we hope to bring our experiences with the cats at Animal Care Centers of NYC to those who may want to adopt, foster, or rescue them. These are personal stories shared from our time spent with the cats. We are not experts or professionals in cat behavior. We are cat lovers that dedicate our time to caring for stray and abandoned cats needing homes. We fall in love every d

ay. We care about the cats, we dote on them, we worry about them. We welcome you to join us in helping them to find their forever homes. To Adopt a Cat from NYCACC

I wish all these seniors were nasty and ready to jump at our throats...No, they are good , too good souls that almost nobody wants.here is another one for tonight. She is soo pretty and so sweet, surrendered for unclear reason, nothing of her fault, may be moving...MUFFIN:231098, a 15 year old unspayed dame. She arrived on 7/3. She is 12pounds and her behavior evaluation is excellent at LEVEL1. Good from day 1, even with the vets. Normal examination except for DZZ of 3/4. Good senior panel.
A volunteer writes:
I was immediately drawn to Muffin's beauty! Her eyes steal the show but she is also glamorously dressed in a Tortie coat. Muffin is a talker. I do not understand what she is telling me but that's ok because she seems quite happy to have me visiting her. Muffin is 15 year old but does not look her age. Good genes I guess and likely good care by her former family. Still she is with us now and we would love for her to find quickly a home to keep her good spirit and her good health. A little shy to start with, soft words got Muffin out of her box. It did not take long for her to come to me and grace me with her sweet and friendly demeanor. A good purrer she is as well as a biscuit maker! She is sooo sweet and is such a pretty sight! Muffin would love to be home, love and be loved! So, come to the Manhattan Care Center, meet this beautiful dame and take her home!

A little update on POOKIE, the little ataxic gal. No, helas, she has not been adopted or rescued yet but I was happy to see that she is a real trooper who climbs on her balcony and slides through her round door inside her bedroom. She is using her LB and eats very well but she has a very wobbly neck when she eats or drinks so Ibought her today special bowls on feet so she does not have to bend so much. An idea of my co volunteer Janice. This cat is really very dear, a very lovely gal who truly deserves a home.

An orthopedic cat for a change....WINTER 230932, a one year old spayed female brought to MACC on 7/1 and recently underwent a hind amputation for a chronically displaced fracture on 7/8.

Winter's history is quite nebulous to me but there is one thing that is not:her incredible resilience and her amazingly good nature despite all the mysterious suffering she might have gone through. Winter, indeed sustained unknown trauma or traumas that broke her ribs and fractured her right femur. These injuries are in a healing stage but as no veterinary intervention happened before Winter's arrival at the care center, the bony fragments are not well aligned. She will need orthopedic follow up in a near future(she did on 7/8). Winter rushed to her door as she saw me coming toward her kennel. Slow down, girl. We do not want to add insult to injury! You will get your "share" of love. I bet she gets quite a number of "shares" from the veterinary team through the day as she is sooo sweet! Winter is really Ms Sunshine, purring, making biscuits and leaning into pets! Winter's life was likely not a bed of roses. She needs a home sweet home, a safe and permanent loving place that will make her forget her past and ensure a bright future. Please, consider Winter as your new forever best friend...She is a true gem! The photos are pre surgery. The video..Well, I called her a boy....

NAPOLEON:226277 is a 14 year old neutered gentleman who is with us since June 7th. Yesterday, he was moved to the new adoption center community room that he shares happily with 2 other cats. I am so glad that he is not in a cage. I wish all shelters would be mostly free roaming....Napoleon was surrendered to us by his third owner because he was spraying which seems to have started after he left his second owner(son of the third owner) as poor Napoleon was bullied by the son's resident cat. Napoleon is not spraying at the MACC and is using his LB. He is a cool and friendly cat who always welcomes company. He is gentle, calm and never frustrated with petting or play time. He is a very good and handsome cat! He comes with excellent recommendations. His owner saying how sweet he is and how funny his meow is(true). His labs are good for a cat this age. His teeth are PDZZ3/4. His behavior evaluation is LEVEL1. Napoleon is really cute and does not have a Napoleon complex. He is a very humble cat and a GOOD ONE too!!!

Look at the today's Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) post: since July First 2025, 632 pets were added to the already overpopulated 3 shelters. Yes, on top of all the already there cats and dogs and rabbits plus those in foster care...Instead of putting this institution down, help in any way you can. One of them is POSTING, SHARING, FOSTERING and ADOPTING!!!!
To illustrate this , here is a gem of a cat:TASHA:230457, a 12 year old spayed gal relinquished to us for housing issues on 6/26
This lovely gal would very much make a new owner very happy to have her as a friend.... Tasha lived with children and is known to be a very friendly and affectionate pet who enjoyed playing, staying around her people, brushing, being carried and stayed on the lap. She is LB trained. Medically she was found to have bilateral otitis media(that is being treated) and to be mostly edentulous. Her senior panel was completely normal. She was a bit shy the first day she arrived at the care center but not anymore, she is a socialite, a total love and ...a big eater. Amazingly, she looks much better than when she arrived at the care center, better groomed and better looking. She did very well on her behavior evaluation. Sweet Tasha is waiting for her forever in our MACC new adoption center.

Tira 228376 is another heartbreak, likely to stay in her cage for a long time. She is young(one year old), very pretty, friendly, sociable and super playful. A really very nice and fun youngster to spend time with. She arrived on 6/3/2025 at the MACC as her owners were moving out of the country. She did scratch a vet the day after she arrived at the care center but she was then a bit off the wall...She comes with excellent recommendations from her former family:friendly, outgoing, playful with strangers, kids and other cats although she sometimes took time to warm up. No experience with dogs. She is a Level2* and enjoys pick up, being hugged and kissed by the assessor.
So, where is the catch? Tira was born with only one kidney. Her SDMA is 21(upper normal is 14) with a stage 2 IRIS/renal disease. BUN/Cr 30/1,7. She has also to make it worse, a heart murmur grade 2-3/6 with a pro-BNP of 180(max is 100). Adopters are not going to go for that although miracles do happen....She is such a cutie...
Her videos are in the comments

HOOT #230159 is a handsome 4 year old un-neutered male who was found in a park. His adoptability??? Not the greatest despite the fact that he is a very sweet and gentle cat, quite good looking too. He is 4 year old(too old for many adopters), he is a bit shy, is located in our hallway in a dark cage (we have too many cats and no place to put them) and the huge cherry on top;he has a 4/6 heart murmur....
A volunteer writes:
Hoot's past is unknown to us. A Good Samaritan brought him in, making sure we knew he was a very friendly and social "stray". And indeed, Hoot is a gem in personality and looks. A beautiful tiger he is, well dressed and well built and who could win a contest of the best and puffiest cheeks. Hoot is a tinsy winsy shy and elects to stay on top of his kuranda bed but he welcomes petting, giving the sweetest head bunts and purring a storm. Hoot is definitively a sweet gent and a cuddler. A smooth operator. Handsome Hoot was found to have a heart murmur that will need to be looked in by an outside veterinarian. Such a good cat will give his new owner or family a lot of joy and love. If you are up to provide the care Hoot needs, he is an amazing pet to share your life with. Come and meet him very soon at the Manhattan Care Center.
Level2* as shy but very good boy. No labs. No proBNP and not a candidate for neutering within our walls. He has been here since 6/23 and will be with us for a long time more if no help happens....

Yzma #229095(not a great name) is a 4 month old little one who has been with us for exactly one month, an orphan kitten found on highway I-95.
A volunteer writes:
Yzma was found perched on top of a highway sign:I-95. She had a wound under one of her eyes and her hind paws had torn nails. She was so scared but a Good Samaritan managed to catch her and bring her to the care center. Where was Yzma's mom? Where were her siblings? Nobody will even know...She was very underweight, dehydrated and with a cold upon arrival at our facility.Yzma has been with us for a good month now. She has remained fearful but is at least curious like a 4 month old kitten should be, playing an unintentional game of hide and seek with me. She comes forward, emerging from her hide-out, sometimes like a Jack in the box, accepts a brief pet on the head and quickly backs off. Yzma is what is called an undersocialized kitten and for no fault of her own...The love story with her mom and her siblings was cut too short and as an orphan and without the help of a concerned citizen, Yzma would have been history... You could make a big difference in Yzma's life by taking her into your home and patiently, teaching her all the ropes to become a balanced adult and a happy pet. Yzma is waiting for You!
Her behavior evaluation is a Level3.
Not a good video but she was skittish. Will try various games on Thursday.

A forgotten senior, like soooo many at MACC....Adoptions and rescues are slow everywhere, we all know that but lately, the number of cats(old and young, sick or not, shy or not, spicy or not) who have been in cages for ever is beyond imagination...and heartbreaking.
TWINKLE #227019 is a 14 year old spayed Tortie brought by the SW of a very ill owner on May 20th....Twinkle unfortunately could not be rehomed. Twinkle is a very pretty lady, well dressed, well groomed, well behaved, friendly who is located at a bottom cage in adoptions at MACC. People barely look at her or rather not at all. She was a bit distant when she first arrived but is now a very sweet lady who does not look her age. She has a good appetite, uses her LB, does not swat or hiss or does not do anything that would make us say anything worrisome about her...She is really a good girl. She lived with that one elderly owner only, was a bit shy with strangers and affectionate although independent too. Here, at the care center, she comes right away out of her bedroom to welcome her visitors. He spirit seems ok, she seems to still have hope that something good will happen to her, that someone will love her and take her home....
She is a LEVEL1 for behavior.
As a 14 year old, her teeth are not great and she does have a component of renal disease with an SDMA of 18 and some bllod and protein in the urine-No crystals, no UTI.

I love SEBASTIAN #229583, an 8 year old neutered male OS(moving). Sebastian comes with excellent references and lived with kids. He is healthy except for his weight of almost 19 pounds, something playing against him as well as his age and the color of his coat:black. He is a very sweet cat, very welcoming(he was shy at first) and he loves company, softly purring like the sound of a pigeon. He arrived on 6/15 at the care center. Beha eval is 2 because he was a little tense upon pick up(he is 19 lbs...)He already had a cold and is over it. He would make really a lovely pet!!
A volunteer writes: Sebastian is a BBB gentleman, big, black and beautiful. A full figure feline, eighteen pounds of love! If you get to meet him, you will mostly see that he is a sweet, shy, easy going and loving cat who yearns to be a friend. When I first met him, Sebastian was hiding at the back of his cubby(he is not shy anymore and rather call for attention when he sees someone at his door). Few treats and soft words got him moving into his 'living room". He head bunts and leans into pets in slow motion but purrs a storm. He is fine being outfitted with a bow to enhance his natural ebony beauty. Sebastian is with us as his family moved to a place not allowing pets. He comes with excellent credentials stressing how gently playful, quiet, affectionate and smart he is. He does not have any experience with other cats or dogs but would be very good with kids. Sweet Sebastian did very well on his behavior evaluation, is already neutered and could go home today to be your most loving, endearing and faithful companion!
