This week's heat may be the first of the season, but it definitely won't be the last. Hot, humid conditions can lead to heat related illness in pets, but with a little bit of knowledge you can avoid this for your furry family members.

What pets are at risk?
•Brachycephalic breeds (e.g., pugs, Persian cats, and breeds with restricted airways)
•Large breed dogs
•Senior animals
•Pets with underlying conditions such as heart, lung, or airway disease, and obesity
•Pets with a long or thick coat

Tips to keep pets safe:
•Keep pets indoors with air conditioning when possible.
•Provide plenty of fresh, clean water.
•Exercise pets early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler. Never leave a pet chained outdoors during extreme heat.
•Never leave pets in a parked vehicle. Temperatures can quickly increase, even with the windows open. Call 911 if a pet is seen alone in a hot car.
•Do not fully shave fur off pets. Though fur trimming is acceptable, fur provides protection from both heat and sunburn. Use pet-safe sunscreen if needed on exposed skin.
•Avoid hot sidewalks and surfaces like asphalt which can burn paw pads.

Signs of heat stress:
•Excessive panting or difficulty breathing
•Seeking shade or trying to lie down
•Red tongue and gums
•Drooling, thick saliva
•Increased heart and respiratory rate
•Weakness, stupor, or collapse
•Altered mentation, disorientation, or seizures
•Bloody diarrhea and vomiting
•Signs of burned paw pads, including limping, reluctance to walk, blisters or redness on the paws, licking or chewing at the paws, and vocalizing when pressure is applied to the foot

If overheating occurs:
•Move the pet to a shady and cool area
•Spray cool (not cold) water on the body
•Do not cover with wet towels as this can trap heat
•Seek veterinary care immediately

If you do not have access to AC for you and your pet, there are 15 cooling centers around the city which allow pets, including all Petco locations. You can find those location at this link https://finder.nyc.gov/coolingcenters

Here comes the heat NYC! A few simple tips to keep your pet safe as the outdoor temps & humidity rise.

*Provide PLENTY of fresh water!

*Protect paws. Outdoor surfaces heat up quickly. Use booties and/or stay off concrete & asphalt.

*Know your pet's limit in the heat. Their size, breed, age & health all play a part. Every pet is different!

*Know the signs of overheating...heavy panting, excessive drooling & lethargy are early signs of a potential emergency. Move you pet to a cool area immediately.

*Have a cool area for your pet to hang out. Darkened room with AC or a even a fan. Cooling mats are awesome as well.

*NEVER, EVER leave your pet in a car during the summer months. Not even for a minute. Not even if the windows are cracked.

Tick season is upon us. Please check your pup after outings! Prevention is your best defense, though. If your interested, please call us to discuss monthly meds that can work for your pet.

⚠️ As warmer weather brings more opportunities to spend time outdoors, it also brings an increased risk of tick exposure. A recent NYSDOH - New York State Health Department advisory reports rising cases of Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and babesiosis in people. These tick-borne diseases can also affect dogs, making regular tick checks important for both people and pets.

Your dog's fur is paradise for these parasites, and ticks can be easy to miss once they've attached. Your veterinarian can recommend a year-round tick preventive as a first line of defense for your dog. Even with prevention, it's important to check your dog (and yourself) for ticks after spending time outdoors. For humans, wearing light-colored clothing can also make ticks easier to spot.

While people and pets cannot directly spread tick-borne diseases to one another, many of the same diseases can affect both. Ticks may also move from pets to people, or vice versa, making prevention and regular tick checks important for everyone who spends time outdoors.

If you find a tick on your dog or yourself, remove it promptly. Then monitor for signs of illness and contact your veterinarian or healthcare provider if concerns arise.

Refer to this graphic for a quick guide to where ticks tend to hide on dogs and how to safely remove a tick.

It VERY important to get you dog vaccinated for leptospirosis. NYC has a lot of rats and lepto is in our environment. We have cases every year. And while lepto is treatable, if not detected early can kill your dog. Treatment also requires hospitalization and a great deal of resources. It's much more expensive than getting a yearly vaccine.

Not sure if your dog is vaccinated or up to date? Please give us a call & we can check their records.

Canine leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that can have serious consequences in dogs and can also affect humans.

"It is more common in the warmer weather months, especially after periods of heavy rainfall," says Dr. Aly Cohen, extension veterinarian for the Riney Canine Health Center.

Prevention of leptospirosis includes vaccination, and pet owners should discuss with their veterinarian if vaccination is appropriate for their dog.

"Any dog can be at risk, either from drinking stagnant water, other exposure to urine-contaminated water or soil, which could be right in the backyard."
