For obvious reasons, community cats (feral or stray) may not allow themselves to be brought inside (even if we wanted to/could). But when the temperature gets above 90ยฐ F & there is no breeze/air moving, I have taken an oscillating fan out for our outside kitties. They seem to appreciate my effort, but overall, they seem happier lying under an azalea bush on the cool dirt. ๐Ÿ˜ฝ Just make sure they have plenty ofcclean, cool water (ice cubes help). For bigger, longer lasting "ice cubes," I've made small water balloons & frozen them to put in large water bowls. ๐Ÿ˜ธ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐ŸŒž๐Ÿ”ฅ

I love all animals! It might not feel like summer right now, but it will soon. Please be sure to keep your dogs safe.

Please spay or neuter any cats that are living outdoors. If everyone took care of their backyard/garden we wouldn't have such a problem. There are many low to no cost spay neuter vets. Please help!

ATTENTION NYC ANIMAL LOVERS!

This is for nyc friends. We have a rare opportunity to get municipal funding for a spay/neuter program and a pet food pantry pilot program. City Council Members Lynn Schulman and Justin Brannan are proposing a Speakerโ€™s Initiative of $1.5 million to fund these badly needed services. They need the support of other council members to make their proposal a reality. If possible, request a meeting with your council member to let them know this is important to you. If you are not comfortable requesting a meeting, please at least email your council member. I can provide an email template, but the email will be more effective if you add a personal story. Please DM me for template. Please share with other animal lovers in NYC only. People should only contact their own city council member.

This cat was abandoned today! The previous owner left a very sad note that the could no longer care for her. This poor cat and people deserve better.

Far too many kittens die every year when a Good Samaritan takes orphaned kittens away from their mom. Humans simply cannot replicate a mother's care. Mom is their BEST chance of survival. If you find kittens, please follow this flow chart to determine next steps and ensure that they SURVIVE!

Rabbits are a major commitment. Please don't buy one for Easter.

I have to admit when I was little my father would buy one for me every year. We had 6 rabbits eventually. It was too much for a child. I wish they had thought it through more carefully.

Here at the Wild Bird Fund, we began taking precautions against highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in early 2022. We're still at it! And we continue to evolve and improve our prevention measures as the virus evolves and the situation changes. We're always working to protect our staff and volunteers, while continuing to care for the wildlife who need our help. We also want to make sure that members of our community stay safe.

At the clinic, we follow strict biosecurity protocols, including patient isolation, continual disinfection and use of PPE. We also work closely with Mt. Sinai and the NYC Health Department to track the virus.

HPAI, or avian influenza H5N1, is highly contagious among and deadly to poultry, including chickens and domestic ducks. Itโ€™s also been found in dairy cows. In the wild, HPAI primarily affects aquatic birds (geese, swans, ducks, shorebirds, gulls) and raptors, as well as some corvids (crows, ravens). And it has been found in some wild mammals.

Common songbirds and pigeons are still deemed low risk.

At this time, the CDC classifies the health risk to the general public as low, but there have been 68 cases in the U.S. We encourage you to visit the CDC website for the latest information on human risk and prevention measures (links below).

SAFETY TIPS:

๐Ÿ”ธ Do not interact with waterfowl or raptors, especially any bird that appears unwell.

๐Ÿ”ธ If you see a sick or injured bird from this group, please do not rescue it yourself. In an NYC park, call the Urban Park Rangers via 311. Outside of parks, call Animal Care Centers at 212-788-4000, option 8. You can also call or text WBF at 646-306-2862 for guidance.

๐Ÿ”ธ If you handle *any* sick or injured birds, please wear gloves and a mask, and thoroughly disinfect everything afterwards, including any surfaces the bird touched.

๐Ÿ”ธ Do not feed waterfowl (geese, swans, ducks, gulls). This causes them to congregate in large numbers, increasing the spread of disease.

๐Ÿ”ธ Keep your dogs leashed and your cats inside. Do not let pets interact with or roam near waterfowl or poultry.
