Bearded dragons communicate a surprising amount through their eyes, and paying attention to subtle changes can reveal important clues about their health and mood. When a bearded dragonβs eyes appear bright, wide, and alert, it usually indicates that the reptile is comfortable, healthy, and actively aware of its environment. However, half-closed eyes may suggest fatigue, mild stress, or discomfort caused by lighting, temperature, or handling. Swollen eyes can sometimes occur during the natural shedding process, but persistent swelling may also signal irritation or infection that requires closer observation. Sunken eyes are often associated with dehydration, which means the dragon may need better hydration through fresh water, proper humidity, or hydrating foods. Watery eyes can be an early warning sign of respiratory issues or environmental irritants such as dust or poor ventilation. If the eyes remain fully closed for long periods while the dragon is awake, it may indicate illness, weakness, or a reaction to unsuitable lighting conditions. Bulging eyes can occasionally appear when a bearded dragon prepares to shed around the face, but if excessive, it could suggest pressure or health concerns. Finally, cloudy eyes are typically a normal sign that the dragon is about to shed skin around the eye area, revealing fresh, healthy scales underneath. Understanding these visual signals helps keepers respond quickly and provide the proper care, ensuring that their bearded dragon remains healthy, comfortable, and thriving in its habitat. π¦β¨
