K9 Mattis was a hero, a partner, and a constant source of joy 💔
He and my friend Mark served side-by-side with Alpharetta Police, but their impact reached far beyond Georgia.
Together, they inspired people across the country and around the world, helping children, teaching life lessons, and showing what loyalty truly looks like.
If you ever saw them together, you knew they were a team in every sense of the word… two best friends, ready for whatever adventure came next. And there were so many.
They traveled, they served, and everywhere they went, they brought smiles.
Mattis was special. A dog with heart, a dog with purpose. Mark even wrote two books based on their bond, teaching lessons about responsibility and kindness. I read them with my son.
Meeting Mattis was unforgettable. He put his paw in my hand, and I trusted him completely. His calm, steady presence made you feel safe. He made Mark the best version of himself.
Today, we mourn his passing, and my heart is with Mark and his family who adored him.

I had adopted her but she refused to come away with me. It was weird because dogs can't wait to leave the kennel. She was crying and stubbing her paws. I should have dragged her. But when I looked down, I understood the reason and I had to make a CHOICE "When the time came to take her home, she was just out of that cage, from that moment a new world awaited her, a wonderful life and a lot of love. Any other dog would have sprinted into the embrace of her rescuers. However, she did not. She stood steadfast, maintaining all fours, and resisted emerging from the cage. In a corner, a petite Chihuahua named Taco gazed at her with trepidation. She comprehended that she was on the verge of losing her closest companion. And in that moment, a slight miracle unfolded. The couple saw the whole scene and decided to adopt them both. They did the documents also for the chihuahua and all 4 went out the door of the shelter. was taken in the car, before leaving. Personally, I would like to wish these two dogs a happy life full of love! But above all so much happiness also to these two wonderful people

After spending time in Texas helping clear debris fields and continuing the search for victims, K9 Roxy and her Handler Chuck returned home to Indiana for a rest period. Roxy unexpectedly crossed over the rainbow bridge on Thursday.
"Our hearts are aching. Roxy wasn't just a valuable asset from a search perspective, she was friend to everyone on our team," said Civilian Crisis Response Team. "Always ready to play tug of war and help brighten spirits. Please keep Chuck and Roxy's entire family in your thoughts and prayers."

An entire chapter of the rescue has closed. First, my Creed who truly embodied the mission of the rescue to heartbreakingly making an appointment today for Evie to join her long-awaited bonded mate, Von Hektor.
She's laying just a few feet from me as I make this post, knowing she will be in God's arms later today.
Where do I even begin to process another loss. These losses seem to mimic a fear or anxiety that things are changing, and not sure if it is for the best. Time is never my friend. It always wins.
As I look through the photos of Hektor and Evie over the years, I had almost forgotten how bonded they were. When Hektor passed, I worried about Evie. I was worried that she would grief deeply. Thankfully, she made fast friends with another long term sanctuary dog, Kinset.
I will be posting videos of Her & Ev as I called them throughout the days. There are so many as they were rescued WAY back in the summer of 2013! What an absolute honor to care for them both for their entire lives.
Long term followers know them from their 14 days escapade in 2013 when they crawled under their fence and were finally trapped at a nearby camping site. I never want to relive that moment. First, Evie was trapped and then Von Hektor walked up behind me as I released Evie from the trap. I never forgave them but it strangely made me love them even more.
During that time, friend of the rescue, Fallen IMPD Officer Rod Bradway (Hero) helped in the days long search along with my close friends, Allan and Jeannette Shrum. Jamie Bradway, Rod's wife, also assisted in scanning the west side of Indianapolis in search of them.
I'm sure Rod is watching over Evie today knowing that she is arriving soon. He loved Hektor and Evie. I'm mostly happy for Von Hektor because he loved Evie so, so much. It felt odd having Evie without her very big brother.
What can I say? Evie has been afflicted with the same disease as Hektor....degenerative myelopathy. My heart feels like a punching bag.
