We have been receiving many calls today about cases of leptospirosis in Greenpoint and Williamsburg. Here is some background information: Leptospirosis is a bacteria that is found mostly in contaminated puddles or soil. Rats and raccoons are common carriers of the infection and the bacteria is spread through urine. Even after a puddle dries up the bacteria can live in the soil for up to a few months. A pet can become infected with leptospirosis by drinking water from a contaminated puddle or eating contaminated soil. A pet can also become infected by stepping in contaminated water or soil if they have cuts or sores on their paws.

The best ways to prevent your dog from getting leptospirosis is making sure they're FULLY VACCINATED and to make sure they don't eat or drink things off the ground. Although the vaccine does not prevent 100% of infections we recommend that your dog be vaccinated for leptospirosis if they visit dog parks. Leptospirosis can also be spread to humans but infection in humans is less common due to the fact that we are less likely to ingest contaminated water and/or soil. If you have further questions about leptospirosis or want to make sure your pet is up to date with this vaccine, please give us a call or send us an email.
