Central Park Zoo

The Central Park Zoo is part of an effort to save wildlife that began 120 years ago with the creation of the New York Zoological Society, an organization founded on science and hope which has since grown to become the Wildlife Conservation Society.

Our snow monkeys, aka Japanese macaques, live on an island in the center of the Temperate Zone that resembles their natural habitat in Japan. It includes a pool heated for their use in winter, that mimics the hot thermal springs of their native habitat. These social monkeys are the northernmost of all non-human primates.

You’re looking at the world’s fastest rodent! Patagonian cavies are a medium-sized rodent related to Guinea pigs and capybaras, and are native to central and southern Argentina. Their long legs allow them to outrun predators, with some reaching speeds up to 40mph! See if you can catch a glimpse of them the next time you visit the Central Park Zoo.

Today we’re bringing you into the New York Aquarium where Senior Trainer Stephanie and Trainer Kathryn are working with our two female California sea lions while their exhibit at the Central Park Zoo undergoes necessary maintenance.

In this off-exhibit space, Stephanie and Kathryn practice sea lion husbandry behaviors as well as crate training four times a day. This is for enrichment purposes and to ensure a smooth transfer process when the female sea lions are ready to go back to their home at the Central Park Zoo. According to Stephanie they are receiving a fish diet of capelin and herring.

We look forward to sharing more updates with you and letting you know when they will be heading back to their exhibit!

This , we would like to spotlight the Critically Endangered Rodrigues fruit bat. These bats act as pollinators in their native range, a small island off the coast of Mauritius. They carry pollen with them as they fly from tree to tree, and after eating fruit, they disperse seeds through their droppings. Visit the Tropic Zone at Central Park Zoo to learn about them.

The WCS and each of our five parks play an important role in saving and preserving some of the world’s most endangered species. Learn more about our conservation work: https://bit.ly/3pKDmBo

Tiny cotton-top tamarins are around 10 inches long and weigh a little more than a pound on average. They are one of the most endangered primates in the world. It is estimated just 2,000 adults remain in the wild.

But there is some good news! We have a new breeding pair of cotton-top tamarins at the Central Park Zoo. Our female was born at the zoo a few years ago, and she was recently paired with a new male that came to us from an accredited zoo in Kansas. This pairing was recommended by the Cotton-top Tamarin Species Survival Plan (SSP) of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). Species survival plans are cooperatively managed breeding programs involving AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums that focus on maintaining genetically diverse populations for select species. You can see these diminutive New World primates in our Tropic Zone exhibit.

Snow leopards enjoy exploring the waterfall and rocks in their habitat and like to rest in the lush vegetation when they’re not active.

Insider tip: the large rock under the overhang at the front of the exhibit is heated, providing a comfy place for these big cats to curl up in cold weather. Stop by to spot our spectacular snow leopards for yourself.

There are two new Von der Decken’s hornbills on the block!

The two males were hatched at the Bronx Zoo in 2023 and were transferred to Central Park Zoo in December 2024. We often transfer animals between our Wildlife Conservation Society parks to support collaborative breeding programs and raise awareness for conservation of specific species. Von der Decken’s hornbills are native to dry regions of eastern Africa. The males have large, red bills, whereas the females’ are black. You can see them in the Tropic Zone.
