As we welcome spring, we start to see more allergies. Dogs experience some of the same allergy signs people do, including sneezing, a runny nose, and itchiness. Preventive steps include regular bathing and wiping down dogs' fur after being outdoors when pollen counts are high. If your dog is scratching or licking their paws excessively, we recommend making an appointment to help diagnose allergies and recommend treatments to keep you and your pet healthy this spring!

April is Heartworm Awareness Month: It is springtime here in Astoria, which means many people are remembering it is time to start their dogs and cats on flea and tick prevention. We all know fleas AND ticks are bad here, but there is another parasite. People should be just as concerned about their dogs and cats getting, which is heartworm disease. Heartworm disease is spread by a mosquito bite, and it only takes one bite for a dog or cat to become infected. Even a 45-day gap in heartworm prevention can allow a heartworm infection!

It is vital that all dogs receive prevention year-round to block infection. Signs that your dog may have heartworms are coughing, labored breathing, and exercise intolerance. A blood test is needed to diagnose the disease. The old adage that prevention is better than the cure is true! Heartworms can be treated successfully if caught early. However, they usually cause irreversible damage to the heart. Our goal at Modern Vet Care is that every dog is on heartworm prevention year around to prevent this horrible disease.  ❤️

Senior Sunday ❤️🥰😍 Dr. Ehmann rescued these brothers from the streets of Steinway and Broadway. They were crying out for food 😢 while the world kept passing them by. We are grateful she stopped and picked these boys up. They are now warming up and getting the nourishment they need.
