I love a full, empty spiral notebook, eager to be filled with wonderful stories, helpful titbits, phone conversations.

I lost my last baby opossum today. I was hopeful that he would be a pet and stay here, but males wouldn't. My heart is broken once more, this time over this tiny 31-gram baby whose eyes were just about to open. Life is so fragile.

Just when my three baby opossums were about to open their eyes, one passed yesterday? One today. My heart breaks with every loss. I’m not getting back into rehabbing but am really enjoying/hurting. I have to pry even a newborn’s mouth open, tease the tip of the tongue from its glued position on the roof of its mouth as it clamps its hands on the tube as it tries to pull the tube out. Once it’s on top of the tongue, gently I guide the tube past the lungs into the stomach, clamp my fingers on the tube to keep the baby from pulling it out, then push in the appropriate amount of formula based on the weight of the baby. In my rehab days, I might have had 13 newborn opossums and up to 30 baby squirrels after a terrible storm. I have so many wildlife stories, so exhilarating, so exhausting, but I am so honored to have done it for babies would have died.

The big galoot, a little over two years old, saw a raccoon looking for cat food on the porch. He didn’t bark!!!! He wears a bark collar, but it’s not tight and set on sound rather than anything stronger. Earlier, he would have barked, jumped up 2’. Maybe he’s not so incorrigible after all!

Oh, my. I’m no longer officially a rehabber, but when my angel Bellville student Jessica asks me to try to keep three baby opossums alive, I can’t say no. As Jessica and her youngest daughter visited the goaties and piggies, I noticed that the opossums weren’t warm in the box. Like any female rehabber, I stuffed them into my bra, hence the p**p on my dress. It will wash out—or not—but the opossums won’t survive if not warm. To feed them, the rehabber must weigh each to determine how much formula to give them. Then, the rehabber must run the tube over the tongue and down into the stomach, bypassing the lungs. Repeat every few hours, every two if they’re newborn. Pray for me that I can keep them alive to thrive in the wild once more with hope they will choose to live in the forest near me to protect me from snakes, scorpions, anything else that might bite in the night.

Welcome to Curly Q Zoo, TT (Tiny Tot)! A friend heard her tiny cries under the hood of a car. Two of our 16 cat rescues passed recently, so we adopted this little tyke. She’s automatically p**ped the cat litter box (not sure about the p*e). David has dementia, so she’s a perfect partner for him. We’re all living happily ever after.
