While kids and adults alike are enjoying Halloween this year, make sure your pet remains safe. The five most common Halloween hazards for pets are ingesting chocolate, candy, raisins, candy wrappers & glow sticks.
1. GRAPES/RAISINS: extremely poisonous. Very small amounts can cause kidney failure in dogs and, possibly, in cats. Symptoms include: vomiting, nausea, decreased appetite, lethargy, abdominal pain.
2. CHOCOLATE: most toxic. Dark chocolate, especially, contains methylxanthines—chemicals similar to caffeine. Symptoms of chocolate ingestion are vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, agitation, increased thirst, elevated heart rate, seizures.
3. CANDY: very toxic. Large ingestions of sugary, high-fat candy can lead to pancreatitis in pets, which can be painful and sometimes fatal. Symptoms include decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, abdominal pain.
4. CANDY WRAPPERS: dangerous. Pets will eat candy with the wrappers on, and these foil & cellophane pieces can cause a life-threatening bowel obstruction that may require X-rays to diagnose and surgical intervention to correct. Symptoms include: vomiting, decreased appetite, not defecating or straining to defecate, lethargy.
5. GLOW STICKS: dangerous. Cats, in particular, love to chew on these items. While not usually life-threatening, their contents can cause pain and irritation in the mouth, as well as profuse drooling and foaming at the mouth.
