Rusty’s Angels Sanctuary is a 501C3 nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a safe and caring environment for senior canines. Most of our rescues come to us because their owner has passed away or has moved into a nursing home situation. As long as the dog is healthy enough to handle a transition into a new home then we do our best to find the perfect forever home. If the dog is not healthy e

nough then they live out whatever time they have left here at our sanctuary knowing unconditional love until the very end. Rusty was Emilee’s first rescue, she adopted him at the age of “ancient”. He was pulled from the euthanasia list at the local county pound. He was skin and bones, deaf, going blind, had a mouth full of rotten teeth and so lost and scared. He taught her that animals don’t deserve to die alone after loving us for all their lives. He is why she wants to give these dogs the ending they deserve and have earned. They deserve the unconditional love to the very end that they give us from the moment they meet us. She promised Rusty that she would continue to help those just like him live out their twilight years knowing complete unconditional love.

July was rough…

On July 30th it was brought to our attention that Brinlee who was being fostered by Annie, one of our animal caretakers, had multiple seizures overnight. Brinlee has been on 2 types of seizure medications for the last year to keep her seizures under control.

Annie brought her to us in the morning and Joyce took her to the vet. The seizures were clustering which means having multiple or lasting much much longer than normal. Both scenarios are life threatening for Brinlee. Our vet gave her an injection of Midazolam which finally caused the seizures to stop but just 1.5 hours later when she woke from a nap the seizures started again. Sadly there was nothing more we could do for Miss Brinlee and I had to make the tough decision to let her go.

She arrived at our Sanctuary in April 2024 and just this past March after Annie lost Duke she went home to live with Annie as a foster. She loved Annie so much and those feelings certainly were mutual. What a life she lived. She got to go to work with Annie everyday and play with her Sanctuary friends and then got to go home with her every night. They were a match made in heaven. Annie was the best mama to sweet Brinlee.

We all loved sweet Brinlee and miss her so much. Rest In Paradise Brinlee. And big hugs to Annie.

Posting again because I think it only shared 1 video and not the whole post…

The story I’m about to tell is so very bittersweet…

July 13th I will never forget… I was just 1 mile into a 19 mile training run in Flagstaff. I checked my phone and saw that Joyce was messaging the work group. I didn’t read it because I wasn’t trying to work that day I was trying to train. Then a second message followed and the first words I saw were I’m so sorry for your loss. So now I had to go see whose baby had passed away. I was shocked to read it was our Junior. He had quietly and peacefully passed in his sleep. I was devastated. I sat on a fallen tree and just cried.

You see just 1 month prior Junior was diagnosed with vestibular disease. However we gave him supportive care for a couple of weeks and by July 1st he had fully recovered. That being said I hadn’t put my hands on him or sat with him or loved on him for 13 days after that. Life was so busy. That is why for me his passing was devastating. I thought I had more time….

If you remember Junior arrived with his little “sister” Baby Goat. This sweet amazing little dog enjoyed her time at our Sanctuary but we hesitated putting them up for adoption as a bonded pair because Junior was so much older, we thought it would make it more difficult to find the home that Baby Goat deserved. So Baby G waited patiently as life at the Sanctuary took its turns and had its moments. Although Juniors passing was devastating, this also meant beautiful little Baby G could finally go up for adoption. This is why the story is so bittersweet. On July 30th she went on a meet and greet and began her trial adoption with a wonderful family that has 2 cats and a giant pet bunny. They had just lost their littler senior terrier named Turtle on July 22 and their home felt empty. When Michele saw Baby G’s picture it was love at first sight.

Just 3 days into Baby G’s trial the Truffin’s knew she was home and was going to be loved for the rest of her life. Thank you Junior for being such a good boy and watching over your sister until her perfect family was ready.

Juniors favorite person in the world was our Animal Caretaker Erin and sadly she was the one who found him the morning he passed. To say this was heartbreaking for her is an understatement. I asked her if she would like to share her thoughts on Junior and their special bond.

Here is what’s she said:
“Junior was the sweetest boy. I loved how he would stand up on his back legs for treats, staring at me with his big, dark, beautiful eyes. His ears always made me laugh. He was so gentle and calm, even with his energetic sister running around him. Junior would follow me around the yard wherever I went. I'd always stop to give him some pets, and he'd just melt into my hands as I pet him. I will always remember the songs he would sing while I was making his dinner or when he just wanted my attention. If I was ever having a bad day, he knew exactly how to make me feel better. I miss him so much everyday but I'm so thankful I got to be a part of his life 💚”

Rest in Paradise Junior and congratulations to Baby Goat and her beautiful family. She is our Adoption # 257!!

The first photo says it all. A love was formed between Will and Sophie and it was precious to see and experience. Both dogs were 15 when they arrived here. And they passed away just 2 days apart. I considered sending Sophie with Will but we were hopeful the change in her meds would give her more time. Instead she told us she wished to join Will.

On June 30th Will became very lethargic and weak. After a vet exam and X-ray we discovered that he had a mass on his spleen that was ready to burst. Joyce brought him back to the Sanctuary so we could all say our goodbyes and spoil him with love and junk food. And on July 1st we let him go. Will was a special boy who only lived here at our Sanctuary for 4 months. Some of the special things about him were how sensitive he was and how gentle he was with all animals. He truly was just an amazing and loving dog.

Sophie arrived in our care in May. We knew from experience that we wouldn’t have her long but we vowed to make the end of her life the best it could be. She was a very independent girl and no matter how bad her arthritis and mobility got she was adamant that she didn’t need our help. The sweetest thing happened on the day we said goodbye to her, she let us hold her, love her and help her without getting mad or stressed out. That gave us peace of mind that she was ready to go be reunited with her boyfriend Will. So on July 3rd we set her free.

I should have listened to my gut and sent them together but sometimes you just want to try to give them more time.

Both Will and Sophie were amazing even with all their medical and hands on care they needed. Our team did an exceptional job giving them all they could.

Rest in paradise you two. We miss your presence like crazy but are so happy you are together in heaven romping around in healed bodies.

Sadly because of some recent losses whose stories I still need to write, we were able to offer assistance to these 4 beautiful souls. Their situation became urgent and my heart just knew we had to help.

Recently they lost their human mama who was their primary caretaker. Their human Daddy was left to handle their care along with 2 younger dogs and 12-15 feral cats and kittens. He was completely overwhelmed. (Two other rescues have stepped up to take the younger dogs and ferals cats).

These babies were very very loved but almost to a fault. The story began years ago when mom was breeding Chihuahuas. When she decided to stop she was going to rehome them but couldn’t find it in her heart to do so. Because of this their medical and living situation got out of control. Feeding and caring for 7+ dogs and a feral colony can get expensive and time consuming. This family did the best that they could with the resources they had.

Now that these four are with us they are learning to be potty trained, learning to love the outdoors, learning to love healthy food and clean bedding and learning love from other humans. It will be a long, slow and patient process but I can tell you that already just 1 week since we took them in, they are different dogs.

I’m sad for our losses but thankful that we could make room for all 4 of these souls. They deserve the best of everything we can give them and they will get it all.
