There’s an unusual election coming up next Saturday, June 14th that affects food producers and land stewards in New Orleans and surrounding parishes. Erica Johnson has been representing urban growers on the Crescent Soil and Water Conservation District Board since 2022. She is the first Black member and the second woman to serve on the board of supervisors. She provides a unique perspective on the issues affecting growers in the New Orleans metro area and has done a great job representing our diverse needs. Now, in a very rare (almost unprecedented) move, someone is challenging her for this spot.
The outcome could determine whether this long-underrepresented region continues to see inclusive, community-driven conservation or whether it returns to the status quo. Show up and make your voice heard that the soil and water conservation districts of Louisiana should be representative of the diverse communities stewarding the land of Louisiana—including small farmers, sustainable agriculture, urban agriculture, and Farmers of Color.
Voting is not at your usual polling place, so please take note of the locations. Open 8am-6pm.
