Onward Dog

Onward Dog Onward Dog is about helping people solve behavioral problems and find balance with their dogs. Onward Dog isn't just about training dogs.

It's about fixing relationships. My job as a dog trainer is to clarify all the things that get lost in translation between human and canine and help bring balance back into homes.

Loving the fall decorations on the NM Green!

I just met with a client that is suffering from not one but two serious and physically debilitating diseases simultaneously. She is as physically and emotionally vulnerable as a human being can be and she still has the courage to put her own feelings aside and do what is best for the long-term well being of her dog. I have never been more humbled and inspired by a client. The rest of us (myself included) have no excuse. What is best for your dog's long-term wellness may very well run counter to your own immediate comfort and emotional needs. Do it anyway.

Normally, I don't film in the middle of a session like this, but I saw an opportunity to show what the real work can look like and took it. Tig is a dog that struggles big time with visitors coming into his home. He has a couple of bites to his name. Just me being in the house and getting close enough to film took time and a lot of work. This video was taken about an hour into the session.
Luckily, like a lot of reactivity cases, Tig's problem is rooted in insecurity rather than true aggression. Furthermore, he has at least one human (his owner) who he trusts one hundred percent. Using 90% non-verbal communication (body language, eye contact, spatial pressure), we were able to capitalize on that trust and build what I like to call LEADERSHIP from Tig's owner. The information had value because it came from a trusted source. Verbal markers and food rewards were added once the non-verbal communication had been established. Tig doesn't want to be attacking. He is starting to know that he doesn't have to.

For many dog owners, this would not be a big deal. It doesn't look like much. But for Lev, just letting me be close enough to take this photo without exploding is kind of huge. He is still a little tense, and he still has a very small comfort zone. His work is just beginning. But in just one session with some leash pressure and spatial pressure communication from the owners, Lev is already making better choices. His whole life he thought he had to lash out at anything that made him uncomfortable because he did not know his humans were there to advocate for him. He never wanted the job, he just did not think amypne else was going to step up. Today, he is starting to learn a new reality.
