We enforce all state statutes and local ordinances pertaining to domestic animals, their welfare & rabies. Regional Animal Control enforces all state statutes and town ordinances related to animals within the five towns of the Housatonic region we serve. It is the responsibility of Regional Animal Control to investigate roaming dogs, animal bites, cruelty to animals, barking nuisance, unreasonable
tethering or confining of a dog, valid rabies vaccination, dog licensure and rabies-related wildlife complaints that present an eminent danger to the public. We work closely with the guidance of the Connecticut Department of Agriculture, our local municipal health departments, Connecticut DEEP and local veterinarians to ensure the safety and well-being of the public and its animals. Officers also proactively patrol areas of concern for safety with domestic pets within the region’s jurisdiction and perform over-the-phone recommendations for animal-related issues. In addition to their routine response to these above mentioned investigative welfare complaints, animal service calls and rabies exposure cases, all Animal Control Officers(ACOs) are responsible for daily kennel-cleaning, facility care, maintenance, and keeping of public animal control records at the regional dog pound facility located at 96 Erickson Road in New Milford, CT. It is through this facility, in which the agency facilitates the adoption of dogs and cats in their care. Regional Animal Control is staffed by one Chief ACO and two Assistant ACOs. All individual Regional ACOs obtain and maintain certification as State of Connecticut Municipal Regional Animal Control Officers which includes eighty or more hours of instruction and a yearly quota of continuing education credits.
