I am always amazed watching chicken moms teach the chicks they are raising how to do things 💕
Todays lesson seems to be self care, later some of the chicks were starting to dust bathe

Hi everyone I wanted to share a new chicken thing I learned this weekend that I assumed could not happen but…
Apparently some roosters, depending on breed and circumstances, will care for chicks!
We adopted Spice, this beautiful, black silky from someone at a local swap meet. We bought Spice as straight run, the seller in no way indicated a gender because they were still young and especially for Silkies this is extremely young to try to determine the s*x.
We brought Spice home, along with another silky we had purchased and tried to introduce them to our current silky flock. The other silky, which was a few weeks odor, was generally accepted, but Spice was not.
We assumed it was because of their size so we pulled spice out and coincidentally, some silkies from our incubator had began to hatch that day, so we tried to keep them together, and it worked amazingly.
Spice immediately began to sit on them and teach them how to eat and drink, which gave me the strong assumption that Spice was a hen… Because roosters don’t sit on chicks or so I thought...
Spice continue to accept and care for any chicks that hatched that we gave her over the last four or five weeks has been an amazing parent, but over the weekend, we heard some strange crowing and knowing any chicks Spice had would be way too young for that we looked closer upon closer and realized, Spice indeed, is a dad not a mom 🙂
