Our area has the potential to see some strong storms later today. Here are a few things to keep in mind for our horse owners. Many of these tips are great for other livestock as well.

Make sure your water tanks are full in case of any power outages!

Today kicks off Severe Weather Awareness Week! Strong winds and tornados can have a devastating impact on horse farms. Here are a few tips to help you prepare ahead of a storm.

🏠 Remember, human safety comes first. Take cover when severe weather is near.
⚠️ Have a way to receive severe weather alerts.
🐴 Have a plan for your horse. Barns may protect horses from debris but can trap them if in the path of a tornado. Large open areas with little debris potential may be better for leaving horses outside but horses may get trapped in fencing or become loose.
🖊 ID your horse (e.g., microchip, livestock paint) and remove their halter
🧰 Prior to severe weather, restock your first aid kit, make sure your horse is up-to-date on their tetanus vaccine, and secure a three-day supply of feed, water, and meds.

Have you ever arrived somewhere and realized you had a passenger you didn’t know about?

Trent went to pick up a load of hay today to bring back to Milan Center. After getting loaded at the farm he did a walk around to check the load and shooed off a hen who had decided to check the trailer out. After making sure everyone was off the trailer he got in the truck and headed to Milan Center.

When he arrived he walked to the back of the trailer and boy was he surprised… there was a hen happily sitting on the trailer after a nice ride down the countryside!

Thankful that the hen did okay with the unknown journey, he got her some new, more secure accommodations and she rode around with him for part of the day before getting returned to the farm this evening.

The family was very happy to get her back as she is about 3 years old and one of the farm favorites.

So the lesson for today is, chickens are very quick to jump up on trailers. Never turn your back or they may just tag along!
