Some losses are impossible to put into words. 🤍

Emily Mae Smith was only 20 years old, and her passing has left so many hearts shattered. She was deeply loved, and it’s clear from every story and photo shared just how much light she brought into the lives around her.

Emily also had such a special love for animals and adopted her sweet Coco Bean from our shelter. In honor of her memory, a fundraiser has been created where all donations will go directly to our shelter to help the animals Emily cared so deeply about.

Every donation, share, and kind word truly makes a difference and helps continue her compassion and love through the animals still waiting for their second chance. 🐾

There’s something so special about watching animals go from shelter kennels and cages to sunny windows, comfy blankets, late night snack runs, and people who already adore them. These are the updates we dream about every single day.

Every spring, we start getting calls about tiny kittens found outside 🐾

And while every instinct says “pick them up and save them” … the truth is, the safest thing is often to pause first.

Most mother cats are still caring for their babies.
They may be out searching for food, staying hidden from people, or waiting for the area to quiet down before coming back.

A kitten’s best chance at survival is usually WITH their mom.

That’s why “wait, watch, then help” matters so much during kitten season 🤍

Before moving kittens:
• Check if they look warm, full, and clean
• Watch from a distance for mom to return
• Make sure they’re not injured or in immediate danger

Intervening too quickly can accidentally separate healthy kittens from the care they still need.

Of course, there ARE times kittens truly need help, and that’s exactly why we made this guide. Save it, share it, and keep it handy this season.

It’s kitten season!! 🐾

And one of the hardest things for people to understand is this:

If you find baby kittens outside, the best thing you can often do… is leave them where they are.

We know that sounds wrong. It feels unnatural to walk away from tiny kittens. But in many cases, mom is nearby hunting for food, hiding from people, or waiting for it to feel safe before returning to them.

A mother cat gives her kittens the BEST chance of survival. She provides:
🤍 warmth
🤍 feeding around the clock
🤍 protection
🤍 cleaning/stimulation
🤍 important antibodies through her milk

Neonatal kittens are incredibly fragile, and removing them too soon can accidentally put them at greater risk.

Before moving kittens, please ask:
• Are they warm and sleeping quietly?
• Do they look clean and have round little bellies?
• Are they safely tucked away and not in immediate danger?

If yes, monitor from a distance and give mom time to come back. Many mother cats will not return if people are standing nearby.

When SHOULD you intervene?
🚨 If the kittens are cold, crying nonstop, visibly injured, soaking wet, covered in fleas, in immediate danger, or mom has not returned for many hours.

If you’re unsure what to do, PLEASE reach out before moving them. We would much rather help guide you through the situation than accidentally separate a healthy family.

FOUND CAT!!🐾

This sweet girl was brought to our shelter after being seen for several days in the vicinity of Possum Drive in New Fairfield. We’re hoping someone recognizes her or knows where she belongs 🤍
She is:
• Female brown tabby
• Approximately 1 year old
• 6.8 pounds
• Not microchipped
• Appears to have previously had kittens

She is currently safe and being cared for at NFSAW while we try to find her family.
