Roselle, a trained guide dog, was resting beneath her blind owner Michael Hingson’s desk on the 78th floor. As the building trembled and smoke began to permeate the air, Roselle performed exactly as she had been trained — and even more. She remained steady. Focused. Fearless.
Amidst the blaring alarms, frantic voices, and falling debris, Roselle guided Michael through the darkened stairwells — descending 1,463 steps. The journey took nearly an hour. During the descent, she paused only to assist others, providing calm amidst the chaos.

After the big July 4 floods in Texas, when the Guadalupe River went back, a brown pitbull named Hulk returned to his family’s broken home near the river.
The house was gone. Only a weak floorboard was left. Hulk sat there.
He stayed. He sniffed the air. He listened. Waiting for a smell. A sound. Waiting for them.
One day passed. Then another. But Hulk never moved.

“The Saddest Eyes the Rescuers Had Ever Seen”
On August 15, 2016, floodwaters in Baton Rouge surged to 2.5 meters in just two hours. While patrolling the flooded streets, rescuer Petit noticed a bush shaking—and then he spotted a dog. A soaked mastiff, eyes barely above the water, struggling to stay afloat. Exhausted and terrified, she could hardly move.
Petit couldn’t leave her behind. He waded in and pulled the heavy dog from the deep floodwaters. The dog responded by crying and moaning “like a big baby". The moment they reached safety, she rested her head on his knees—a silent gesture of trust, relief, and gratitude.

This homeless man saved 30 dogs from drowning. On September 6, 2022, in Jackson, Mississippi, the Pearl River overflowed after record breaking rainfall. The city issued urgent evacuation orders. But Michael Harris, a 57 year old homeless man, didn’t hear them, he was sleeping on the third floor of an abandoned parking garage he’d been calling home.
He woke to sirens and water rushing below.
Instead of panicking, he listened.
A bark. Then another.
Dogs left behind in the chaos.
Michael waded through the waist high water, pulling terrified dogs into shopping carts and makeshift rafts. He tied leashes to his belt and guided them to dry spots inside the garage. Every hour, he went back out through flooded streets, into backyards and porches, following cries for help.
Three days later, rescue teams finally reached the garage. They found Michael surrounded by 30 dogs. Shivering, tired, but alive.
When asked why he didn’t leave, he simply said, “They would’ve stayed for me.”
