National Wildlife Week – Species Spotlight: Fennec Fox

The fennec fox is the smallest canid species in the world — but it’s best known for its oversized ears, which can grow up to 6 inches long. These distinctive ears help dissipate heat and provide excellent hearing, which is essential for survival in their native Sahara Desert habitat.

Fennec foxes are nocturnal and adapted to extreme desert environments. They have thick fur on the soles of their feet to protect against hot sand and an efficient metabolism that allows them to go long periods without free-standing water.

Highly social and vocal, fennec foxes communicate through a range of sounds including barks, squeaks, and purrs.

Come observe their unique adaptations and behaviors during National Wildlife Week and learn how these desert dwellers thrive in some of the world’s harshest conditions.

National Wildlife Week – Species Spotlight: American Alligator

The American alligator was once listed as endangered due to habitat loss and unregulated hunting, however the species has made a remarkable recovery thanks to federal protection and habitat management.

Native to freshwater wetlands, marshes, and slow-moving rivers of the southeastern United States, alligators are apex predators with an important role in their ecosystems. They help control populations of fish, turtles, and invasive species — and even create “gator holes” that support other wildlife during dry seasons.

With a lineage dating back over 150 million years, alligators are often referred to as “living dinosaurs,” offering a fascinating glimpse into Earth’s prehistoric past.

Visit us this week to observe these ancient reptiles up close and learn more about their ecological importance and survival story.

National Wildlife Week – Species Spotlight: Grant’s Zebra

Grant’s zebras are one of the most widespread subspecies of plains zebra, found across East Africa in savannas, shrublands, and grasslands. Their iconic black-and-white stripes are not just beautiful — they play a role in social recognition and may help deter biting insects such as horseflies.

Each zebra has a unique stripe pattern, allowing individuals to recognize one another, particularly between mothers and foals. Researchers also believe these stripes may help regulate body temperature in extreme heat.

As human development continues to impact wild habitats, zebras serve as a vital part of their ecosystem, maintaining grassland health through grazing and supporting predator-prey dynamics.

This National Wildlife Week, we invite you to meet our Grant’s zebra and learn more about the natural behaviors and adaptations of this remarkable species.

National Wildlife Week – Species Spotlight: Texas Tortoise

The Texas tortoise is the only species of tortoise native to Texas and the southern United States. This small, slow-moving reptile thrives in dry scrublands and grasslands, using its strong front legs to dig shallow burrows and seek shelter beneath vegetation.

As a member of the gopher tortoise family, it plays an important role in shaping its environment, helping to aerate the soil and disperse seeds through its herbivorous diet. It primarily feeds on grasses, cacti, and wildflowers, including native prickly pear pads and blooms.

The Texas tortoise is protected by state law in Texas due to habitat loss, vehicle collisions, and illegal collection. It is currently listed as Near Threatened and is a key species in native habitat conservation programs.

This National Wildlife Week, visit our native species exhibit to learn how simple steps — like responsible landscaping and wildlife-friendly fencing — can help protect reptiles like the Texas tortoise.

The white-cheeked gibbon is a critically endangered primate native to the forests of Laos, Vietnam, and southern China. Known for their incredible agility and long arms, these arboreal apes move through the treetops using a specialized form of locomotion called brachiation — swinging effortlessly from branch to branch.

Males and females have distinct colorations, with males typically black with white cheek patches and females a golden or light tan. They are also known for their loud, melodic calls, which help establish territory and strengthen pair bonds.

You can meet this vocal and acrobatic species during your visit to our zoo and learn more about the conservation efforts helping to protect them.

The Angel Island speckled rattlesnake is a rare subspecies found only on Ángel de la Guarda Island off the coast of Baja California, Mexico. Its pale coloration and speckled pattern help it blend perfectly with the island’s rocky desert landscape.

As an ambush predator, this rattlesnake relies on stealth and venom to capture small mammals and lizards. Like other rattlesnakes, it uses its iconic rattle as a warning signal to potential threats — though it’s more likely to remain hidden than confront danger.

This elusive and beautifully adapted species can be seen in our reptile house — a rare opportunity to observe one up close.

The Asian small-clawed otter is the smallest otter species in the world — but what they lack in size, they make up for in personality and intelligence. Native to wetlands and rivers across South and Southeast Asia, these otters are highly social and often live in tight-knit family groups.

Their partially webbed paws give them remarkable dexterity, allowing them to grasp and manipulate food items like crabs, clams, and snails with impressive precision.

Come watch their busy paws and big personalities in action at our zoo!

The Rio Fuerte beaded lizard is a venomous lizard native to the dry forests and scrublands of northwestern Mexico. It is a close relative of the more well-known Gila monster.

Named for the bead-like texture of its scales, this slow-moving but powerful reptile uses its strong jaws and venom to subdue prey like eggs, small mammals, and birds. It plays a vital role in controlling rodent populations and maintaining ecosystem balance.

You can observe this rare and fascinating species in our reptile collection here at the zoo.

Native to the tropical forests of Batanta Island in Indonesia, the blue tree monitor is one of the most striking lizards in the world — easily recognized by its vibrant blue coloration and long, slender tail.

This arboreal species spends most of its life in trees, using its sharp claws and prehensile tail to navigate branches with agility. Despite its vivid appearance, it’s a secretive and rare reptile both in the wild and in managed care.

You can see this incredible species up close right here at our zoo.

Also known as the Patagonian mara, this unique species is a large rodent native to the open plains and scrublands of Argentina. Despite their rabbit-like appearance, Patagonian cavies are actually closely related to guinea pigs and capybaras.

They are built for speed, with long legs adapted for running and hopping — and they form strong, monogamous pairs, often seen resting or grazing side by side.

You can spot these fascinating, fast-footed herbivores during your next visit to our zoo!
