Elsa is working on muzzle conditioning before we progress to her being completely loose around other dogs. She needs that barrier for safety, because there have been incidents with her and another dog in her family’s home in the past, and we need to be safe about things moving forward. This is step 1!

Wiley and I did some training at Lowe’s to add to his repertoire of skills. I chose to head to the garden section with him because I knew we would find some odd surfaces there, and I wasn’t disappointed.

You don’t hear me giving him any commands here, but you DO see me working him through something that makes him nervous. It took a little work to get Wiley up onto this display in the first place, but I chose this spot because of the uneven surface that was full of holes. I knew this would be challenging for Wiley and, once again, I wanted him to see that he could do something scary and survive. You can see him get comfortable throughout this short video. He started out crouching and ended up happily following treats. This was a great positive experience for him.

Welcome to training, Kane! This big guy originally came to training with Marley, because they live together, but I quickly learned that he couldn’t be handled safely. He returned home for a brief period for his family to do some things I requested from them in order for him to be able to come back and safely participate in training. His family did exactly that, and now he’s back for us to dive in.

Marley and I trained in the area of the children’s soccer practice while we were at the park, and she got a LOT more distractions to work through than we expected when we headed there. She was a bit of a chilly ween since the sun was setting 🥶

Wiley has continued training at the park to help him work through a couple of things specific to him. He needs to continue working on reactivity to other dogs on-leash, so the park is a great place to train. He’s also in need of a little more self confidence, so doing something as simple as getting him to jump up on this bench a couple times helped with that. How, you ask? Well, it proved to him that he COULD jump up there, even though he didn’t think that he could (it took a bit of trying), and it also proved to him that he could do something scary and not die. He survived jumping up onto the park bench - it seems silly, but it’s a small win to add to the list 😊

Baloo has been working on his down stays. Isn’t he so proper? This command is super handy if you need your dog to be able to lay down and just relax for a little bit. If you expect your dog to behave when you take them to a dog friendly spot for food/drinks, they’ll need a good down stay command. Otherwise, they’ll be wrapping themselves and their leash around the table, the chairs, tripping the waitress, etc. You get the idea 😎

Building a stay with Baloo! Baloo had absolutely no patience when he first came, but he’s beginning to learn some. Here’s a breakdown of what building his place stay command has looked like. Notice the frequency at which he gets treats, and how it is timed appropriately so that he isn’t tempted to want to get up. We didn’t just jump to this stage, we worked at this to get to this point. Notice that I do have to correct him for getting up at one point, and that’s okay. But don’t *not* correct your dog when you need to, because that’s just as important as rewarding for good behavior. Stay tuned to see how this progresses even more!

Cooper and I had a “different” kind of training session today! My parents were over, so I asked my mom to help out for a few minutes. She walked my husky, Floki, around on a leash near us while I worked with Cooper (who of course was also on a leash) to continue desensitizing him to that.

Then, we ramped things up a bit. Since Cooper got really excited about balls being thrown/kicked and the chase that occurred at the park the other day, we decided we would work on desensitizing to that as well. I had my mom just play fetch with Floki while Cooper held his “place” command.

This teaches Cooper a couple things: 1, that he doesn’t always get to chase after something he wants. 2, that he has to remain obedient no matter what is happening around him. And 3, that he is allowed to relax even amidst chaos (or what he perceives as chaos).

Baxter’s tongue is always slightly sticking out 😂 you can’t tell me that’s not the cutest thing in the world.

He’s beginning to lure into his commands now! He’s got lots and lots of energy, so being able to place him occasionally will be important for his owner. With that being the case, that’s where we started with building a foundation for his “stays”.
