We’ve gotten a lot of questions about Frito our male tenrec that lost his mate.

Will he get another mate? Yes
Will he have more babies? We hope so
Will he and his new mate have babies this year? Most likely not
When will he get a new mate? That depends on Frito

Tenrecs can be very territorial. With Frito just losing Leigh and it being late May, he may not be accepting of a new mate right now. We will try small introductions to Nymphadora with a divided tote he can smell her through it, but if he is not welcoming, we will wait to match him during torpor. The only reason I want to try before torpor is because Frito was so codependent on Leigh. If there’s a chance he doesn’t have to go 6 months alone, I want to try… safely.

I don’t normally do many family posts, but I’m stuck in my feelings this morning thinking about how fast time moves.

🧑‍🎓 Tomorrow my baby (Dayton) graduates 8th grade and becomes a high schooler.
🧑‍🎓 👩‍🎓 Saturday Sean’s two youngest (Gabe and Shyanne) both graduate high school.
💍 In a few weeks we will have Caleb (Sean’s oldest) and Tia’s engagement party.

💔 Tonight we lost our sweet Lesser Tenrec Leigh! She was super pregnant, so we can only assume it was a birth complication. While Leigh was only 5 years old, this is something that can happen with any animal at any age.

We will spend extra time with Frito, and look into matching him up with Nymphadora or finding him someone else. We may have to wait until Torpor to introduce him to a new mate. That makes me super sad as he was heavily bonded to Leigh and didn’t like being away from her.
This is a sad day as a breeder. 💔

I love hanging with my little buddy Athos. He’s just the sweetest and laziest boy we have. We joke that he is allergic to exercise, so he’s on a limited diet to limit his weight gain.
He’s officially retired this month, but he will always be with us as a pet. ❤️🦔
