To reserve a campsite: realize that Recreation.gov will sometimes show the camp is full when it isn't, or say that t

he website isn't available. If you wish to reserve a camp site and the website says it's full, CALL them Toll Free 1-877-444-6777, and if they tell you no sites are available, CALL direct Tahoe National Forest Nevada City office (530) 265-4531 or Camptonville Station (530) 288-3231. Yes, there are some walk-in campsites set aside, no reservations needed! There is NO cell service in camp. Skillman Horse Camp opens for the season late May. Established and maintained by the Gold Country Trails Council and managed by the Tahoe National Forest. MANURE REMOVAL POLICY for Skillman Horse Camp: Gold Country Trails Council funds a separate, additional manure dumpster starting in May. The regular Forest Service garbage dumpster is by the entry gate. The GCTC manure dumpster is closer to the horse pens, you can use either for bagged and unbagged manure. Tip: bring old feed bags and fill those. PLEASE use the GCTC dumpster first, and if full, put your bags of manure in the Forest Service dumpster. Do NOT put bags of manure next to, or on top of, the dumpsters or Waste Management won't pick it up AT ALL. Do NOT spread manure to the bushes. Do NOT leave manure in the corrals. It is very rare that both dumpsters are full, but if they are, take your manure home with you. THANK YOU TO GOLD COUNTRY TRAILS COUNCIL for funding and providing for the dumpster! http://www.goldcountrytrailscouncil.org/donations.html

Official CLOSURE of Skillman Horse camp is October 15 this year, but you can't reserve any campsites online at Recreation.gov after September 30. If you wish to camp anytime beyond September 30, the sites are first come, first served. But, the closure date isn't set in stone. Sometimes when the weather is nice, TNF will extend the October 15 date. If we get an early snow, they will close it earlier. To ensure you can camp after Sept. 30, please call TNF directly, at least three days before you wish to camp.

WATER SHORTAGE UPDATE!! Sat., August 27, 2025:
The water shortage is still in affect. The spring is producing some water which is being captured in the storage tank, BUT it took 24 hours to capture 750 gallons. As of today, the valve that allows water to flow to the spigots in the campground is open, but the rate of flow is low. We filled the 100 gallon water trough. The plan is to check the water level in the storage tank again this coming week. Watch for the signs! Limited supply of water available and WATER IS FOR STOCK ONLY! Please be aware that the spring may not provide enough water for everyone, so bring water for you and your stock. (Photo: Magic Rabbit XY)

WATER SHORTAGE FROM THE SPRING. Due to a shortage from the spring that supplies Skillman campground with water, there will be little or no water available for use while camping. Please bring adequate water for stock and humans.
Two Gold Country Trails Council members (thank you ,Mary and Jerry) did some trouble shooting on Friday. It was discovered that the large storage tank was empty. The storage outflow valve has been closed, in hopes that the tank will fill. The plan is to check it this evening and tomorrow morning to determine the rate of fill. It has yet to be determined if there will be any water for the rest of the camping season. We will keep you posted.

Bears of all sizes regularly visit Skillman camp. Keep your food safely stashed (a bear box is best) and away from horses. If your horses are not in one of the 16 permanent horse pens (built by Gold Country Trails Council), keep your horses securely tied and/or in solid portable and anchored fencing. A stand-alone electric fence corral is not recommended, but an electric strand in addition to a solid pen is a good deterrent. Put a bear bell on your horse when trail riding. Carry bear spray and know how to use it before you head out to bear country. Keep it readily accessible. Trust your horse! Horses have a keen sense of smell and can detect bears before you do.
