Wildfire Safety Tips for Dog Owners
Summer in Nevada County means contending with the threat of wildfires. Here are some tips to help keep your dogs safe in fire season:
Pack a Pet Go Bag: Include food, water, bowls, leash/harness, carrier (if needed), treats, a favorite toy, medications, and copies of medical records. Keep the bag somewhere easy to grab.
Use a Pet Alert Sticker: Place a rescue alert sticker on a visible window or door to let first responders know how many pets are inside.
Practice Your Plan: Go over your family’s evacuation procedure and include your pets. Make sure dogs are comfortable loading into carriers or vehicles quickly. Communicate your evacuation plan to anyone who may care for your pets during fire season.
Keep ID Updated: Your dog should wear a collar with your name, address, and phone number. Microchips are a great backup, just make sure the information is up-to-date. Consider adding backup phone numbers (family or close friends) to your dog’s ID or microchip in case you are not reachable.
Limit Outdoor Time in Smoke: During smoky conditions, keep walks short and avoid strenuous activity. In heavy smoke, try to limit outdoor time to bathroom breaks only. Young, senior, and respiratory-compromised dogs are especially vulnerable.
Create a Clean Air Space: Close windows and doors. Use an air purifier or run your HVAC system with a clean filter. If possible, keep pets in one room with the best air quality.
Watch for Smoke Exposure Signs: Coughing, red or watery eyes, bright red gums, nasal discharge, lethargy, and appetite changes can all signal smoke irritation. Call your vet if you notice these.
