What has NALB been up to lately?

We’ve been busy trapping feral and homeless cats in Idaho Springs. 😻

These adorable little ones are up next! Momma has already made friends with the kind woman who’s been feeding her, so we’re feeling hopeful we can safely get her and her kittens off the streets and into loving homes.

Stay tuned for updates on this sweet family!

NALB got to attend this fantastic training! 👏

Today is National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day, a reminder that emergency planning must include every member of the family.

When disaster strikes, every life matters, including paws, hooves, feathers, and tails.

Last weekend, Jefferson County Animal Control hosted the 2026 Annual JCART Evacuation Exercise with more than 100 attendees and volunteers participating in a full-scale disaster response training.

JCART, the Jefferson County Animal Response Team, is made up of animal control officers from Jefferson County, Arvada, and surrounding agencies, along with incredible partner organizations including JPET (animal sheltering team), AEV (Animal Evacuation Team), FRAET (Front Range Animal Evacuation Team), HEAT (Horse Evacuation and Assistance Team), several veterinary teams, Foothills Animal Shelter, the Jefferson County Horse Council, and the Jeffco Fairgrounds.

We were also proud to collaborate with Gilpin County OEM as they work to build their own animal response team.

This annual exercise is designed to prepare our team to respond effectively during wildfires and other natural disasters. The training simulates real-world conditions and tests every stage of response, including call-out activation, radio communication, animal evacuation and impoundment, sheltering operations, documentation procedures, and animal care.

The goal is simple: ensure a coordinated, efficient response when our community needs it most.

Huge thank you to every volunteer, partner agency, and team member who dedicated their weekend to helping keep both people and animals safe. Because when families are forced to leave home during an emergency, no animal should be left behind.

If only all of our rescues could be this easy. 😅

Brittanie and Marcella responded to a report of a missing dog who may have still had her leash attached. The owner, a senior man, noticed she wasn’t in the home when he was getting ready for bed. He had people coming in and out of the house that afternoon and believes she may have slipped out unnoticed. He searched and called out for her as much as he could in the dark, but unfortunately, there was no sign of her.

The next day, he put the word out that Cali was missing. We immediately jumped into action, concerned she could be caught on something with her leash.

Brittanie was still grabbing gear out of her vehicle when Marcella suddenly shouted, “Got her!” The look on Brittanie’s face was probably priceless... questioning, What do you mean you got her?! 😂

The owner had left to run an errand… and that errand likely saved his sweet girl. She normally goes everywhere with him, so our theory is that when she heard his truck start and leave, she came out of hiding after her overnight adventure and ran to the back door of his home.

When she reached the back door, her leash became caught on a rock.

The easiest hand capture ever and the best reunion as they waited for him to return home. When he pulled in, he was greeted by Brittanie, Marcella, and his sweet dog, Cali. 🥰❤️

13 nights on an adventure he probably never wants to experience again!

English Springer Rescue America, Inc. (ESRA) reached out to us for help with a dog that got away from a foster home in Evergreen, CO.

Panda had been in the foster system with ESRA. The foster family he had grown to love dropped him off at another foster’s home while they went on vacation out of the country. Within hours of being with new people, he managed to bolt out of the home.

From there… his wild adventure began.

Panda traveled miles, with multiple sightings along the way. Unfortunately, he was in full flight mode, running as fast as he could and not slowing down. For days, he continued appearing in new areas, making it difficult to get ahead of him.

The temporary foster family worked hard to keep up and help in any way they could. Bruce followed sightings and strategically placed scent stations in front of Panda in hopes that he would begin to slow down, settle, and allow for a safe trap or hand capture.
(Thankfully, the previous fosters were able to provide Bruce with dirty clothing and Panda’s blankets before they left! This was a huge help, since Panda was actively searching for anything that smelled like home.)

Bruce spent days and nights all over Evergreen putting up signs and flyers, freshening scent stations, relocating them as Panda moved, and eventually setting and monitoring traps.

Over the course of 13 nights and 14 days, Bruce dedicated countless hours to bringing Panda safely home.

We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the rescue, the foster families, and the incredible community members who came together to help this boy get safely home!

13 nights, countless miles, and one determined team, Panda is SAFE! 🎉👏

A rescue that we helped guide from a distance, but still got to celebrate the best kind of ending! 🥰

Vivi, a newly adopted dog, slipped her harness with her new owner while desperately trying to find her previous foster. Understandably confused and scared, she went into full survival mode.

Her new owner, the foster, and the owner of the rescue all stepped up immediately to help bring Vivi home.

With our guidance on spreading the word through social media, flyers, and posters, the team also set up scent stations using the foster’s scent, food, and a camera. Everyone worked together to give Vivi the best possible chance of being found safely.

Then came the call.

Someone who had seen the posts reported that Vivi was hiding under his truck in his front yard.

The new owner rushed over and spent a little over an hour with Vivi, using calming techniques, patience, and enticing foods to slowly build trust and guide her closer.

The foster was less than a mile away when the text came through… 🥹

SAFE! ❤️🥳

The new owner was able to safely secure Vivi and get her into the vehicle.

After 4 nights and 5 days, this little girl was hungry, tired, and ready to be done with her adventure.

She is now back at her new home, recovering and bonding with her new family.

Charlie's Place Animal Shelter received a call for help about a pregnant cat in Idaho Springs, CO and reached out to us for assistance. The homeowner was a huge help, continuing to feed this sweet girl and the other strays in the area. Thankfully, he noticed she was starting to look a bit round and suspected she might be pregnant.

After a couple of days of monitoring the cats and allowing her to get comfortable with a new trap in the area, we were able to safely catch her before the babies were born.

She is now safe and will be under the care of Evergreen Animal Protective League. ❤️

We are now working on catching her boyfriend next. If he’s friendly enough, we’ll work toward rehoming him. If not, he will be neutered and returned to where he was trapped, helping prevent future litters and improving life for the local cat population.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this rescue possible. One cat at a time, we’re making a difference. 😻

Have to love when the rescues land right in your own backyard! 😻

This little man, **Hank Williams**, had been missing for 5 days. Today when I stepped outside of my home, I heard meows for help.

The sweets wasn’t very high up, but he just couldn’t figure out how to get down.

With a ladder and some wet food, I was able to coax him closer. Once he was focused on devouring the food, he let me scoop him right up.

The best part, he’s microchipped! He is now back home with his family. ❤️

Sometimes the rescues really do come looking for you.
