Did you know petting can be enrichment for dogs? That doesn’t mean you can just go around petting every dog and claim you’re “providing enrichment.” Some dogs find petting stressful or overwhelming. A good rule of thumb is the 3-second test: pet for 3 seconds, stop, and see what the dog does. If they lean in, nudge you, or ask for more, that’s usually an invitation to continue. If they move away or seem tense, give them space.

So, how is petting enrichment? Many dogs crave social interaction. Dogs are social animals, and positive 1:1 attention with humans can help meet their social and emotional needs. Calm, enjoyable interaction can be just as enriching as food puzzles or play.

Cooper here can be a little fearful of new people, but once he gets comfortable, he absolutely demands attention and affection.

If you’re like me, you don’t really trust anyone to watch your dogs. When I’m watching other people’s animals, I’m grateful they trust me, and I don’t take that lightly.

When you’re looking for a dog sitter, what are some things you look for? What makes you say, “Yes, that’s a person I trust my baby with?”

Pictured is Woody. Woody is a senior, eats healthier lunches than I do, has a caterpillar blanket that he takes everywhere, likes to do parameter checks out in his yard, and doesn’t care if there’s a rabbit near his yard.

For the last few months, Moo hasn’t been feeling like himself. His fur started changing, he became more reactive, began hiding, and didn’t want to be touched as much. Occasionally, he wouldn’t eat. He developed a hacking cough and, unrelated, had a seizure.

That led to ultrasounds, X-rays, bloodwork, and testing for infections and viruses. We saw an internal medicine specialist, but the cause of his cough is still unknown. His lungs showed some inflammation, so he received a steroid injection to help. The following week, he vomited all over the house in a single day and had 7+ focal seizures the next. That led us to a neurologist and an MRI. Moo was diagnosed with late-onset epilepsy and will be on seizure medication for the rest of his life. Since starting treatment, we’ve started to see pieces of him come back. He’s been spending more time with the family and becoming more active again. Now I start the long process of learning everything I can.

Tallulah wants you to remember that when she came to the rescue, she was 23 pounds. Then her foster families and forever family decided to force her on a diet. Suddenly, she hears the word cancer, and she’s gained 2 pounds. She would like to get back to 23 pounds by next Wednesday.

Hello, this is a really difficult post for us to make, especially knowing how many of you all love Tallulah. Today, we received the heartbreaking news that she has an aggressive cancerous tumor in her bladder, along with a very large lymph node. Unfortunately, this isn’t something that can be operated on, and radiation isn’t an option given her health. We were told that she has 2–3 weeks left. We are completely devastated and were not expecting anything like this.

Our focus now is on making the most loving and humane decision for her. We are hoping to let her go peacefully before she begins to suffer, especially before she loses the ability to p*e or experiences further complications. We love her more than words can say, and I’m so grateful we trusted our gut and pushed for more answers instead of continuing to treat what we thought were just chronic UTIs.
