Today was one of those days that reminds us why foster homes are the lifeblood of rescue.
Last night, we received an email about a group of kittens in Cannon County. We had previously told the person reaching out that we could help if she was willing to foster them, but she explained she is currently between homes and boarding her own cat.
Then came the heartbreaking update: the property owner was threatening to drown the kittens.
We immediately put out a plea to our foster team. Despite several fosters recently saying they needed a break, three incredible fosters stepped forward without hesitation. Because of them, we were able to say yes.
This morning, two members of our cat team met the person who had reached out. We were surprised to learn she is only 17 years old.
This young woman has already trapped and had EIGHT mama cats spayed on this property, preventing countless future litters. She has been doing everything she can to help these cats, often with little support.
She was able to catch 10 kittens, estimated to be 4–6 weeks old. Three more kittens remain on the property, and she is continuing her efforts to catch them. Tragically, she told us that one kitten died yesterday after the owner sprayed the kittens off a porch with a water hose. She believes the kitten aspirated and did not survive.
Because three fosters stepped up when we needed them most, 10 kittens are now safe, warm, fed, and headed toward a better future. They will all be fixed “ before” they are placed. The cycle stops here.
Tonight, we'd like to recognize not only our amazing foster families, but also a determined 17-year-old who refused to look the other way. She saw suffering and chose to act. The world needs more people like her.
Please keep these kittens in your thoughts as they settle into foster care, and please say a prayer that the remaining three kittens can be safely caught soon.
Rescue takes a village. Today, that village showed up.
