is a private, no-kill, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that has found homes for over 20,000 pets. We provide a temporary, loving home for dogs and cats that no longer have a family of their own. The animals in our shelter have ended up here for a variety of reasons ranging from abandonment, to rescue from an abusive situation, to owner surrender because they no longer can or want to take care of

them. Our animals are loving, family pets who are desperately awaiting for their forever home. was founded in 1989 by a group of generous volunteers determined to find homes for animals in need. Over the decades, our objective has remained the same: to place animals into permanent, caring homes and advance the humane treatment of animals through education.

Sometimes the sweetest love stories are the ones no one sees coming. 🤍🐾

Muffy came to A.D.O.P.T. after she and her kittens were found as strays. She’s the kind of cat who likes to take her time, carefully deciding who she trusts.

Then there’s Darby. He arrived with a broken leg after being found as a stray, but somehow never let it dull his affectionate spirit.

Somewhere along the way, these two found each other.

You’ll often catch them curled up together, sharing naps, grooming each other, or simply enjoying each other’s company. Out of all the cats in the room, they always seem to choose one another.

No dramatic love story. No grand gestures. Just two cats who found a little comfort in each other while they wait for the next chapter of their lives. And we think that’s pretty special. ❤️

Who knows? Maybe their happily ever after includes two different homes… but for now, we’re just grateful they found a friend when they needed one most.

What an incredible day at Furry Friends & Fast Rides! While we’re still finalizing everything, we believe the event raised nearly $6,000 for the animals at A.D.O.P.T. Pet Shelter.

Just as importantly, we introduced so many new people to our mission and welcomed visitors from across the Chicagoland area.

This event wouldn’t have been possible without an amazing community. A huge thank you to:

🥾🐾 Ready to hit the trails with confidence?

Introducing Paws on Trails our brand new 4-week training course designed for dogs who are ready to take their leash skills beyond the neighborhood.

If your dog gets distracted by wildlife, wants to greet every dog they see, or pulls toward passing bikers and hikers, this class is for you! We’ll build the skills you need for calmer, more enjoyable adventures together.

🌲 Here’s how the course works:
🐾 Week 1: Foundation skills indoors
🐾 Week 2: Practice outdoors (off the trail)
🐾 Weeks 3 & 4: Put it all together at Oakhurst Forest Preserve!

✨ We’ll focus on:
• Impulse control
• Loose leash walking
• Trail etiquette
• Real-world distractions

📍 Class size is limited to just 4 dogs so each team gets plenty of individualized coaching.

This class is best for dogs who have already completed a puppy or beginner manners class (or equivalent positive reinforcement training).

⚠️ Please note: This course is not designed for dogs working through leash reactivity or aggression. If that’s your goal, our Feisty Fido class is a better fit.
