Does your horse seem to suddenly be losing weight?

Have you noticed your horses losing weight? What is your horse doing fine just a month ago? Rapid weight loss particularly noticeable across the back, can be due to the onset of Cushing’s disease.

Cushing’s disease is a common metabolic problem caused by a tumor of the pituitary gland causing the adrenal glands to produce too much cortisol. This time of year, the change in photoperiod, Or day length, Exacerbates this condition. This condition can progress over time, causing loss of strength and connective tissue, and extremely long hair coat, or just slow shedding in the spring, but usually the first thing that people notice is that their horse has lost weight for no apparent reason.

If your horses back bone is sticking out, please call your veterinarian for a blood test rather than a chiropractor, it isn’t that anything is wrong with your horses back. It is true that they will frequently need a dental float, but primarily, they need a blood test and medication. You can call me at 509-961-5854 for an appointment. I am still doing farm calls. You can also haul in

Rabies in Yakima
All pet owners please have your animals vaccinated for rabies. This is extremely serious. Rabies has not been seen in our area in many years. A bat was diagnosed with rabies on the coast and now one in Yakima. This is the time to booster all of your animals, especially cats.

UPDATE. Our state veterinarians office has confirmed that no cases of heartworm transmitted to animals while in our state have been CONFIRMED . If anything changes I’ll be sure to let you know

I recently heard an advertisement on the radio from a local veterinary clinic here in Yakima, stating that they’re starting to see heartworm disease in Yakima. I want to clarify how heartworm is transmitted.

Heartworm is transmitted by mosquitoes that are NOT able to transmit heart worm in our area and we never will be able to . For the Mosquito to transmit heartworm, it requires persistent warm temperatures in the evenings which we do not have and will never have in Eastern Washington. You do not have to worry about heartworm disease if you are not traveling outside of this area.

When you hear that heart worm disease is being seen here, it’s being seen an animals that travel outside of our area and come back with the disease. This is not contagious to your animals please do not be alarmed and do not feel that you immediately need to put your animal on heartworm medication. We do not have heartworm transmitted in Washington. Without serious climate change, it will never happen.

If you’re going to be traveling to tropical climate areas or even the south of the United States, then yes you need to be concerned. Everybody do not panic

The incidence of heartworm disease is being investigated at all times by Washington state university parisitology department. They pick up the dead canines on the side of the road including coyotes, these animals are examined for any incidents of heartworm disease so as soon as it does occur you will know about it but it has not occurred in our area

Horse owners: when you see your veterinarian this spring, be sure to ask if they will be providing emergency services to you. Make sure that you have considered the fact that you may need a veterinarian on an emergency basis.

I am no longer taking emergency calls except from some of my own clients. I apologize for any inconvenience but I am no longer able to do it

It’s been quite a while since I reminded everybody the changes that can be made even in an older horse with proper trimming of the feet and calisthenics. No smoke and mirrors just horsemanship and basic veterinary medicine. Knowing your horse, and knowing where he is sore, can do wonders. If you have an interest in this type of work, you can call me for an appointment 509-961-5854

A snack and a bandage in one

Sterilized tilapia skin is sutured onto the lion’s paw to cover the burned tissue. Although the lion will likely eventually chew off the bandage, veterinarians hope it will stay in place long enough to speed the healing process.

This morning we had to say goodbye to Buddy. He's had a brain tumor for over year. He's been receiving acupuncture twice a week and he has had a pretty good time of it right up until very recently. I thought everybody might like to see how well loved he was and read his obituary. Look at his beautiful Coffin he's lying on a bed of lavender now. His favorite!
