Understanding Littermate Syndrome in Puppies

Bringing home two puppies from the same litter might seem like a great idea—they’ll have built-in companionship, right? However, many dog owners are unaware of the challenges that come with Littermate Syndrome, a behavioral condition that can develop when sibling puppies are raised together.

What is Littermate Syndrome?

Littermate Syndrome is a set of behavioral issues that arise when two puppies from the same litter (or even unrelated puppies of the same age) are raised together. These issues often stem from excessive bonding between the puppies, making it difficult for them to develop independence and proper social skills.

Signs of Littermate Syndrome:

Severe Separation Anxiety: Puppies become highly distressed when separated, making training and socialization more difficult.

Fearfulness: They may become overly reliant on each other, leading to increased anxiety in new situations or around unfamiliar dogs and people.

Difficulty in Training: Since they focus more on each other than their human, training sessions can become ineffective.

Inter-Puppy Aggression: As they grow, fights between littermates can become more intense, sometimes escalating into serious conflicts.

How to Prevent Littermate Syndrome

If you’re raising two puppies together, consider these steps to ensure they grow into well-adjusted, independent dogs:

Separate Training Sessions: Train each puppy individually to ensure they learn to focus on you rather than each other.

Encourage Independence: Allow them to spend time apart daily so they learn to be comfortable alone.

Socialization: Expose each puppy to different people, dogs, and environments separately.

Individual Bonding: Spend one-on-one time with each puppy to strengthen your personal relationship with them.

Should You Get Two Puppies?

While raising two puppies is possible, it requires significant effort and commitment. If you’re considering adopting littermates, be prepared to implement structured training and socialization strategies to prevent Littermate Syndrome.

By understanding and addressing Littermate Syndrome early, you can help your puppies grow into happy, confident, and independent dogs!

ATTENTION ALL CLIENTS CURRENT AND NEW!

We here at Paws N Suds have been noticing a trend that we would like to nip in the bud right now. We have been noticing a TON of late arrivals for appointments, No call no shows, LATE cancellations, & Walking in before a finished phone call. Now we understand things happen people forget, traffic is a nightmare, dogs get sick, people get sick. But if it becomes a repetitive thing, then it is not things happen, it’s being done without thought or care to your groomers.
We have a very set schedule, we try to work around everyone the best we can to make it as convenient for our clients. So when dogs arrive 20,30,40 minutes late; or cancel their appointment the morning of; it screws up everyone’s schedule. If you’re late it puts us behind in our next client that will most likely be on time, and if you cancel with no notice we cannot fill your spot. And us groomers do not get paid if we are not grooming. We are not hourly paid employees. We’ve also been noticing people showing up without a phone call that their pet is finished. Yes, sometimes we fall behind because of all the things that can happen like mentioned above,or the fact that we can’t predict EXACTLY how every dog is going to behave. But as much as we love our clients, we do not want to take your pet home! If you have not received a text or a phone call from us; it’s simply because your pet is not ready. And that doesn’t mean something happened to YOUR pet or anything had to do with YOUR pet.
We ALWAYS,ALWAYS,ALWAYS will call you or text you. Walking in during a grooming is very disruptive, not only for your dog that is probably having scissor work done, but it also gets all the other dogs amped up as well. That much commotion in a grooming salon is not only dangerous, but that is how the dogs that are being worked on might have issue with their haircut. And then that pet parent gets upset with us
Dogs are not like humans, they cannot ignore disruptions. That why we try and keep them to a minimum so ALL OF OUR CLIENTS FOUR LEGS AND TWO can have a SAFE & fun visit with us.

So with that being said. From here on out there will be fees added to groomings and accounts for all of the following.

1. No Call/No Show: 1st time: $25 , 2nd time: Price of grooming, 3rd time: Full deposit put down to reserve an appointment
2. Late Cancellation:less than 12 hours before appointment: $25
3. Late arrival: $5 per every 5 minutes late. MAX AT 40 minutes passed. Then appointment will be rescheduled and a $25 fee will apply.

4. If you decide to walk in before a phone call or text Is sent; it will be at your GROOMERS DISCRETION if they want to have you walk out until they are finished or send the dog home as is; depending on said dogs behavior and come back another time

Please be courteous of our time, as we always do our best to be courteous of yours
