I’m still taking summer jobs. Please watch out for your babies. Oklahoma summers get hot.
We've already had our first heat stroke case of the year. So here's our reminder:
• Do not leave pets in the car.
• Provide ample shade and fresh water when they're outside on warmer days.
• Keep them inside on days > 90°.
• Restrict exercise and playtime.
• Pets that are overweight, dark colored, brachycephalic, or tend to over excite themselves are most at risk.
Know your pet, and their needs! When hiking, hike with creeks and extra drinking water. When running/walking, avoid asphalt and stay in the shade. Keep playing fetch short and in the shade.
Know what to watch for:
• Restlessness
• Hypersalivation (drooling)
• Dark red gums/tongue
• Vomiting/diarrhea
• Collapse
If you suspect your pet is suffering heat stroke, take a re**al temperature (normal is 99.0 - 102.5). If your pets' temperature is greater than 104.0, use cool water all over the body; especially ears, paws, underarms & tail area. Then give us a call so we can direct you from there. You can use cool, wet towels on your drive in to keep cooling if needed, and the AC on!
We also ask during this time that you avoid bringing "moral support" pets with you to the clinic. We have limited space in the building, and it's too hot for them to wait in the car alone. If you have no other option than to bring them along, please let us know, don't leave them in the car unattended!
As always, let us know if you have any questions or concerns!
