71 inside! I’m sure I’m the coolest shop in Muskegon. I prioritize comfort for the pups and myself everyday. I buy top quality equipment and scheduling appropriately. Dogs run a lil hotter than us, so if I’m too warm they are certainly too warm. ❤️🦮

This kitten is being spayed. She is only 4.5 months old and she was pregnant. She is a baby herself, now thankfully spared the misery of raising a litter on the streets. This is the battle we are up against: babies who can have babies, cats who can get pregnant while already pregnant or as soon as two weeks after giving birth. This is why we implore you, if you see a cat, please fix a cat, pregnant or not. We fix kittens at two months, two lbs, following shelter medicine protocols in our clinic. We are begging you to help us help them. Feeding cats without fixing= breeding. Photo credit: Dr. Erica Unz, DVM.

🎉We have the dates for our next sets of Training Classes with our Canine Care Coordinator Tyler Aviano, CPDT-KA!🎉

https://signup.com/go/zJJUxne

Starting Wednesday, July 23rd, or Saturday, July 26th, slots are open for the 4-week Pet Parent Basics,
"Dog Training 101 (Training Humans For Modern Dog Ownership); Building A Foundation" Course!

Cost is just $100 for all four weeks.

In this course, we will build the foundation for all your future dog training endeavors using hand signals and verbal commands. We will develop and work on the communication skills, trust, patience, respect, and understanding required for a healthy human-dog relationship. We will cover the basic commands (sit, down, stand, focus, leave it, come, stay, wait, leash walking) that all other commands will build upon. By the end of the course, your furry family member should have mastered their doggie pushups and have an understanding of basic commands.

Class Outline:
Week 1 Doggie pushups (Sit-Down-Sit-Focus-Stand)
Week 2 “Stay” and “Wait” (what’s the difference and when to use) and “come”
Week 3 Leash walking and “Leave it”
Week 4 class review with final exam

Payment for the course can be made beforehand or on the first day of class by Venmo , by card, check or cash at the shelter.

Fireworks season is upon us! Good advice is to give the medication before the pet is nervous so it doesn’t enhance the anxiety. So a couple doses may be needed for best results. Also if your dog could be a flight risk, at a min use sharpie to add your name and number to their collar!

📢REMINDER!!📢

If your pet needs sedatives to help them through the 4th of July fireworks, please give our office a call within the next 7-10 days to get those prescribed and filled. 💊

Satisfying squeaks! This dog loves to lay in the dirt and this was like music to my ears. Lots of Loose hair removed in the bath, then rehydrating conditioner, then back to the dirt piles she goes 🤣

Honoring Veterans who gave all today, including the decorated War dogs. Stubby’s story Is one of the more unique and accomplished! He was a Boston/mix bull Terrier breed.

He received numerous awards and honors, including a gold medal from the Humane Education Society, a wound stripe, two Purple Hearts, and was even promoted to the rank of sergeant.
His story is quite remarkable!

First do no harm! Look at adding fiber to diets

🤏 If your groomer is routinely expressing your dog’s a**l glands, it could be doing more harm than good.

In healthy dogs, these glands should empty naturally during bowel movements💩—not by force. Repeated squeezing can traumatize the delicate ducts, which can lead to chronic inflammation, scar tissue that can affect the gland’s proper function, and long-term damage.

Even worse, every manual expression carries the risk of introducing bacteria🦠 and triggering infection. Unless there’s a medical reason, it’s best to leave healthy glands alone.

But here’s the thing: when those glands don’t empty naturally - and you start noticing that fishy odor🤢 - it’s usually a sign there’s a deeper issue.

Without enough pressure during a bowel movement, those glands don’t empty like they’re supposed to — and that leads to inflammation, impactions, and in some cases, full-on infections.

What’s causing those mushy poops in the first place? Often, it’s a mix of:
🥦 Low-fiber diets
🍗 Food sensitivities (like chicken, beef, or dairy)
🦠 Gut microbiome imbalance
🤏 Routine expression at the groomer

If your dog is struggling with soft stool:Add a small dose of slippery elm or psyllium husk to your dog’s meals — it can help bulk up stool and encourage the glands to empty on their own.

🥣 Start with ¼ tsp for small dogs and increase up to 1 tsp for large breeds, based on size. Always introduce slowly, and always ensure plenty of hydration!💧

This Sunday at 12pm EST, we’re unpacking everything you need to know about a**l gland health — and how to fix it. We’ll cover home remedies, anti-inflammatory supplements, and Dr. Becker’s protocols for infection, impaction and more! PLUS all of the information from this episode, with dosages and recipes, will be available in a downloadable PDF on the Inside Scoop group page!
