Today is National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day! We know that bringing your feline friends to the vet can be stressful and unpleasant at times. So, here are some tips to reducing stress at your cat's vet visits:
1. Get an easily accessible carrier that can be opened from the top, front, and can be taken apart to help us handle your pet with as little stress as possible.
2. Get your cat familiar with their carrier with positive reinforcement! Set out their carrier and reward them with a treat when they get close to it or even when they step into it. Do this weeks in advance to vet visits, and don't force them into the carrier. Cats don't learn from punishment; remember, go slow and use positive reinforcement.
3. Use familiar scents on blankets, clothes, and toys in the carrier to help ease some tension and stress. There is also a pheromone spray called Feliway to help with stressful events. Spray a blanket and /or carrier 30 minutes prior to getting your pet in it. (avoid feliway if your have asthmatic kitties)
4. Some cats need medications to help with stress, tension, and travel, and that's okay! Give us a call with any questions or if you think your pet might benefit from calming medications for future vet visits!
